He's dead according to me, but he may be just injured if you want it that way.

I'm pretty sure he's dead. His last action was saving her and letting her live and in turn, He died.

The final scene is best in the movie. I wish it had been longer.

Throughout the film, we get hints that Garrick is not quite the completely remorseless psychopath we expect him to be. The final scene, when his motives for breaking out of jail (where he would have preferred to stay so he couldn't hurt anyone else) are revealed, turns him into a sympathetic character - not a good man, but not a completely bad man, either, and one who hates his compulsion to kill and still loves his former GF even though she turned him in.

Meanwhile, even the reactions of Swanberg's punk friends, who had been throwaway characters up to then, are interesting. One is suspicious of Garrick, which is odd because they're supposed to be his fans. The other continues to be worshipful, even when it's obvious that Garrick is about to kill him.

Overall, I like the movie a lot, but I wish there had been a little more time to expand the events of that final scene. For instance, I wish we had had a bit more of Sarah's reaction to Garrick showing up and, especially, to the revelation of his motives. For example, at some point it must have dawned on her that she was never in any danger from him and that in fact it was running away from him that put her in harm's way.

I think AHWTD would have made a good two- or three-part TV series. There was a lot more to explore about these characters than could be accomplished in 90 minutes.
