What do you make of the ending? (SPOILERS)

Don't read ahead unless you've seen the movie because I'm going to give everything away.

I left this movie with the feeling that it was anti-Semitic, owing to the revelation at the end that Roman -- by far the most evil character in the film -- was secretly a Jew. For anyone else who saw this film, do you think that was the filmmaker's intention?

reply

yeah, yeah - anti-semitic. oh please! Is it a clue word in these days? Did you pay an attention in sthg else? I think it's more psychological films, and director wanted to show how characters changes in different situation (generaly). It was inspired by true story but only inspired. Anti-semitic scenes weren't the main thing in that film. Please read polish history and rebelion in 1968. It was a part of history. In SB (police) there were a lot of jews (in goverment too) NOT ONLY Roman. Then (in 1968) had to leave Poland a lot of jews, so not only he.I bet he didn't want to be a jew, or even he couldn't identify with his ancestry. it was very often. I'm not sure if I wrote clearly, but it was very complicated situation. BTW i think film is great

No, it was not anti-semitic. I'd be the first to say it was. It showed the bullcrap jews and so called enemies of the Polish state and what they had to endure. It showed how they were persecuted.
It is a great film, perhaps the best Polish film I ever saw.
