Not Very Funny (It's a Bloody Friggin Mess)

OK.....so after 4 days of trying to get thru this I finally managed on it.

What is Eric Idle trying to prove exactly? That he can do opera? That seems to be the only reason for this. The only funny bits were when the remaining Pythons were on. The song with Brian and Judith simulating sex was kind of amusing.

That pretty much sums this up. Monty Python is gut busting funny. Be it their films or TV show, they were pretty much 98% on the ball. This is just mildly amusing at times, and downright boring most of the time.

I realize it was a send up of 'Messiah', but ...it just didn't have any 'zing'.

The Lumberjack Song being tacked on was again, mildly amusing, but it just didn't belong. It seemed as if they were reaching.

The crowd seemed to be having a good time, tho I can't figure out why.

Spamalot was fantastic, I really had high hopes for this. Worst Python ever. Of course we know it isn't 'all' of Python, and that's pretty much a statement on how well these people were as a GROUP. This was written primarily by Idle and a non-Python member. It shows. Tho in the special features Palin says some of the songs he wrote in 1969. I'm assuming he meant the stuff we're familiar with.

The Choir, The Soloists, the whole musical production were A+++++++++++.

5/10

I was in the audience when this was filmed and am a huge Python fan.

The tickets were very expensive so only die hard Python fanatics were present. In my experience, seeing my idols on stage was enough to make the evening the best night of my life, as I am sure it was for some of the others. I agree that the show wasn't absolutely fantastic and not as good as Life of Brian, and I wouldn't see it again without Idle, Palin, Jones and Gilliam. I am sure the same applies to many of the others in the audience, though obviously some would want to see it again.

John De Prez has been working with the Pythons since 1978 and is a great friend of Eric Idle. He is as much a member of the Python team as the main five and Neil Innes and Carol Cleveland.

I would argue that Innes and Cleveland go FAR further back (Innes in particular) with the creative team of Python. Tho I'm not aware Carol had any actual input into the writing.

That said, I will admit again that the musical production itself was brilliant. In all phases.

It was just an awkward show, as if it couldn't decide what tone it wanted to take on.

I suppose you're right (having been ther an all), I too would have been having a blast 'in the moment', but the piece itself is just...well...a bloody mess.

Ugg, Spamalot was not fantastic. Spamalot was Holy Grail for Dummies.

I have to sort of agree with the OP. It was overly long and ... well, just watch "The Life of Brian". It was funnier.

Glad they didn't try and make an ongoing Broadway musical out of this.

I guess they were worried they'd get picketers outside every night cause it's sort of related to Christianity or whatever.
