DVD release soon - how is it?

Can anyone who has seen the show tell a bit about it?

reply

The show retells the story of the Life of Brian through newly written songs, with brief moments of narration and dialogue between the musical numbers. It's not like a standard stage musical with costumes and scenery changes (like 'Spamalot'), but more of a concert, with the leads in evening dress. The music spoofs various musical genres, from the operatic through to Bob Dylan. Eric Idle and four very talented soloists take the lead roles, backed up by an orchestra, a choir, and a troop of bagpipe players. The musicians and choir join in the gags at various points.
The other Pythons who were present, plus Carol Cleveland (with sheep accompaniment) and Neil Innes make brief appearances. Aside from Eric, Michael Palin is the most prominent Python in the show, introducing the performance in drag as Mrs Betty Parkinson, and reprising his role as Pontious Pilate and Nisus Wettus ("Crucifiction? Line on the left, one cross each.").
There was a terrific atmosphere in the Royal Albert Hall on the night, with the audience gleefully clapping along to 'Liberty Bell' (the Flying Circus theme music), waving electric candles, and joining in with 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life'. For me, seeing the Pythons live on stage was a decades-long dream come true. I'm looking forward to seeing how much of that brilliant atmosphere has been captured on the DVD.

I saw an interview with Idle, who said that the release will be in June, 2010...so, it won't be long. I think that was the DVD release, as opposed to a theatrical release.

He, also, said that Michael Palin appears as Betty Palin (Sarah's mother). Now, I don't know if it will be Parkinson or Palin.

You're right, it is 'Palin' in the show to get in the Sarah Palin gag. Michael was announced as playing Mrs Betty Parkinson, and billed as such in the theatrical programme - and Mrs Betty Parkinson is a reference to a 'Flying Circus' sketch ('Come Wife Swapping'), so I always think of him as Betty Parkinson rather than Betty Palin.

IT WAS AMAZING

However bear in mind this comes from a 19-year old Python enthusiast who saw it live. And I spent most of the time ogling at the fact that my heroes were THERE in front of me. I guess the oratorio itself wasn't that great, but is still funny :)

It was released in the USA yesterday. Wonderful spoof on a Handel oratorio, with musical references aplenty. I have watched it three times and pick up something new every time. Last time through, Mozart's "Don Giovanni" in the "Arrested" number.

Worth the price for "the Liberty Bell" "Always Look On the Bright Side of Life" and "the Lumberjack Song" even if you don't like the rest, which any Python fan should.

I think they could have trimmed a couple of the introductory songs which had nothing to do with the actual film but I suppose were done to "set the tone" perhaps like "Chaos and Confusion" and "There will be Monsters" and "Oh God, you are so Huge".

I'd have started right from the point where Brian's mom is knocked up by the Roman centurian and his birth next door to the manager where Christ was born. All the rest of the show after that moves along quite nicely.

But you have to sit thru quite a bit to get to that.
