Hope's development

In season 1 and 2 it was understandable that Hope wasn't talking or babbling that much.

I was also able to excuse it in season 3 slightly, some toddlers are less verbal than others, but really thought she should be able to speak in a fragmented sentence at least.

Now we are in season 4 and Hope still doesn't seem to be talking at all, and unless I'm mistaken I don't think I've ever heard her have an actual conversation.

I was having conservations with my niece at 2, granted most of them didn't make sense she was still trying to talk. and now at 4 years old, I have legit conversations with her and she has opinions on things.

I don't think I've ever heard hope say more than two words at once. And in the opening episode it sounds like she still dubbed talking. In all my dealings with 3-5 year olds, you can't get them to shut up, so that fact she is so comparatively quiet stands out a lot to me. I know it's not fair to compare children but i'm just noticing it more and more.

And yes, I know it's just a TV show and I still find it funny and I enjoy it. I was just hoping Hope would be more part of the action just wanted other thoughts on this or am I just being an educated snob?

I agree. Her lines are being dubbed and there aren't that many. I think the twins playing her are starting to grow a little different in looks. You can tell them apart sometimes.

I noticed as well. Some kids make great baby "actors" but grow up and can't not follow lines. The toddler who plays Jimmy in flashbacks has more lines and does them quiet well.

Come on, Franklin! It'll be a fun trip!

I don't think you can compare Hope's development with other children her age in the real world.

I'm surprised at the number of posters who question this. As a sitcom, it is in no way trying to or obligated to accurately mirror real life.

The producers have obviously decided that they don't want Hope to be that involved in the action. That's the direction they've taken. It's their artistic licence.

Besides, the focus of the show has shifted from Jimmy's "raising Hope" to his wacky parents.

This never promised to be "The Baby Hope Show."

Thx for interesting link. Thought I was the only one wondering about talking issue. As a senior citizen I looked forward to Hope being old enough to talk. Ala the Olsen twins. Can't help but think show runners wanted that too!

You're not the only one. The subject comes up frequently.

I have a feeling (based on what you wrote) that the people who want to see more of Hope enjoy shows about cute kids. That's not my personal taste, so a "Hope in the background" doesn't bother me. Obviously, the producers have chosen not to highlight Hope.

I believe the original premise of the show was to use Hope as an anchor, an excuse to bring together and to highlight the other wacky family members. People wanting to see something like the Olsen twins will have to look elsewhere.

As I said above, This never promised to be "The Baby Hope Show."

Just my opinion.....

We'll i do live the show as it is. I think it is underrated. It's wonderfully wacky and quirky and clever. However not having her talk at all seems unnatural to me. I don't want a show developed and focusing on Hope as. Do enjoy adult humor and situations.

maybe if we get a season five, we will have a "talking Hope" finale at the end of season 5!

If it never promised to be "The Baby Hope Show," they probably should have went with a different title, maybe some kind of play on thir last name, Chance.

I think the original concept was of this wacky family "raising Hope." Jimmy, who was incompetent, needed his incompetent family's help. The show has mutated away from that idea.

But, if people are tuning-in to see the adventures of a toddler, well, I certainly wouldn't be one of them. That doesn't interest me.

But even if Garcia's other parenting show "Yes, Dear" even though it was more about the parents wacky antics then the kids. They young kids still talked. In fact one Episode was about Sammy's development compared to Logan since they were the same age.

I wasn't looking for the Baby Hope show. Burt was my favorite character and Virginia a close second. I did watch because of them and not Hope.

I was just curious if it was forced or a deliberate choice to have Hope's few lines dubbed.

reply

^^^ exactly. Nobody's saying it should have been the Hope Show. There is a wide area between that and having the child continue to sit there as silent as a 6-month-old throughout the entire run of the show. It was strikingly unnatural to the point of being unnerving.
