Guys...Art theft was a red herring to the audience...

Some people's comments are about why is Clas out to get Roger...nothing to do with the art theft..he made up a story about intriguing art to get close to the wife who in turn would introduce him to Roger so he could get the Pathfinder job...throughout the movie, we as the audience are led to believe Clas is out to kill Roger because Roger stole his painting...then we are told it had nothing to do with that it is because Clas must get the job to save his company/merger/etc...in reality, Clas prob never even knew the painting was switched...we are just led to believe thats why he's out to get Roger..just one of the many clever twists in this film..I loved it...

Quite clearly, DeAd MiKe. The whole scene in Lotte's apartment pretty much spelled it out. Some people just don't realize the fact that Roger's boring job as a corporate recruiter was much more critical to the plot than his secret life as an art thief.

then what about the original painting that was found from the outhouse? why was there no tying up of that obvious loose end?

It wasn't an original painting, it is stated to be a reproduction. This is why Greve just leaves it, it's worthless and had served it's purpose.

The minor question would be why would Greve even have a reproduction in the first place and hide it under a sheet in his apartment (instead of just making the story up), I guess this was in case Roger wanted to pop around to see it after a game of squash or whatever.

as explained in the movie, Clas was going to use Lotte to meet Roger. But then Roger broke off the affair with Lotte, so Clas needed a new way to meet Roger. So Clas made up the story of the Nazi leaving the painting as a way to meet Diana, so she would introduce Clas to Roger, which she did, at the gallery.

but having it under a sheet suggests that it's a painting of high value, something that would tip off someone who maybe wanted to steal it...see where this is going?

clas didn't know roger was an art thief.

as I said the "painting as a way to meet Diana, so she would introduce Clas to Roger, which she did, at the gallery.". Clas didn't know roger was an art thief (we agree, since I never said he did). Clas put the sheet to suggest it was high value as a way to meet Diana (Roger's wife), so he could have a way to meet Roger. see where this is going yet?

He hid it under a sheet, because Diana was over at his apartment when they had sex, and he had to pretend it was valuable, shield it from dust and light etc.

Not a spoiler. Roger was portrayed as an art thief in the trailer and advertisements.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!
