I hope they don't mess this up

Almost EVERY movie that is remade into a movie from a book is messed up by disney! Princess Diaries & Twitches to name a few. The fans of the books agreed that they HATED the movie version. I just hope they don't pick some disney people to star in it. Thats what they seem to do with every DCOM nowadays.

reply

Nope all unknows, are rumored to be cast'. Even some Australians and New Zealenders.

Don't Forget Who you are, What you Love, and Where you came from.

reply

Doesn't seem like too many DCOM people, but already it seems pretty screwed up. At least according to this... D=

I love this book (one of my faves) and don't want to see it made into a completely inaccurate movie.

Filming is going well. I think we can expect this to be a great film on its own merit.

reply

I think they've already mess up the book by changing the main character's name... Her name is Elaine, Ellie for short and they've changed it to Allie... but the whole reason he name is Elaine is to confuse her with the legendary Lady of Astlote. The storyline will be irrevocably different because of that change.

reply

[deleted]

Yeah I hope this turns out well too. I liked the Princess Diaries a lot though. It still says her name's Ellie, are you sure they changed it?

(=Laineylicious=)

reply

i guess it also depends on if they use the book or the manga made from the book as the "source" material...

reply

This is one of my favorite books by Meg Cabot, but I have no doubt there will be serious problems. When I saw who they cast as Lance I was simply shocked.

reply

Yeah I totally believe that's Will's half brother.

reply

At least they cast outside of the usual Disney family, which means no Miley/Selena/Demi/Jonas/any other Disney Channel actor you can think of. As much as I love Selena and Jonas, I'm SO glad they decided to go with mostly unknowns (Molly Quinn, who is now known as Alexis Castle, daughter of the title character in Castle, and Britt Robertson, who is now known as Luxe on Life Unexpected) with the exception of Gregg Sulkin, who was on Wizards of Waverly Place, and Steve Valentine, who was in the Wizards of Waverly Place movie. That means this movie actually has a hope of being good. Thank God. ;)

Baaaaaaaaad character representation. Elle is a blond(wha?), jen a red-head(once again, wha?), also Elle was supposed to be 5.9', but nuh-uh...

GOTCHA!

reply

I hope it turns out to be great, I really liked Avalon High. But why the random name change? And Ellie is supposed to be dark haired, like Will.

reply

I came on this board to know what this movie was about I just got into reading books lately and have started with classic literature stuff like 1984 and tThree Musketeers. I do understand the frustration with Disney or other people messing up books with movie versions but most of that reason is because film makers even making an original script into a movie have boundaries that believe it or not they can;t go past. There are things producers and directors just can't do. But the fact that the DCOMs come from books kind of makes it seem like it could be worse they have less resources to spend. But I am liking this converstaion going on it is getting me interested in this book I just finished reading a book awhile ago and am looking for a new one. Is this book by Meg Cabot I mean I will find out but I am wonderng still. Yea but bottom line authors can write anything in books anything beyond imagination and film makers and producers and screen writers really have to think in the realm of possiblities.

Yeah it's by Meg Cabot. It's very good! I'm somewhat worried too, but I understand that they can only do so much.

Imagination is WAY better than visualization

I should read that book!!!!

reply

They've already messed up with the names... Ellie's last name isnt Pennington. Its Harrison. And from the previews I've seen, the movie doesn't even follow the storyline. This is one of my favourite Meg Cabot books, and now Im gonna be really upset to see a crappy movie based on it..

reply

...
So, I'm going to go ahead and assume/HOPE that this movie's gonna be ending soon.
I can now go ahead and comment:
Yeah. They ****ed this movie up.
The book was really good... and the movie was just, no.
I mean it had potential! I hoped they would make it good! It's not even that hard to put together, I'd bet.
Hah.
Good job, Disney.

reply

Yeah...maybe I would have enjoyed the movie had I not read the book.
But because this was one of my favorite books...I am really upset.
EVERYTHING was different.
I don't think they should have changed the characters around that way.
Like, really?

reply

Yeah they changed the ending so that nothing makes sense. The only change I found ok was the merlin kid.

reply

That ending was ridiculous with them changing the characters around like they did. Why? So unnecessary. I mean, I woulda been even a little okay with them just switching who Mordred was maybe alittle, but the fact they changed who Arthur was? SO NOT RIGHT!!

Will Scarlett has stolen my heart.

reply

I'm not happy either.

It's been forever since I've read the book so I wasn't sure if I was remembering it correctly or not, but the posts on here prove that I am remembering it correctly. I can't remember who Ellie (NOT Allie) was in the book, but I was pretty sure that it wasn't who she ended up being in them movie. And, Modred was wrong from what I remember from the book as well.

Does anyone remember who she really was? I can't remember and I don't have my copy of the book handy and it's driving me crazy!

reply

Ellie was originally thought to be Elaine of Astolat but it turns out she was actually The Lady of the Lake.

She wasn't Arthur though, I can tell you that!

reply

That's what I thought. But, I was thinking I might have thought incorrectly since I haven't looked at the book in four years.

Though, I knew she wasn't Arthur! That was ALWAYS Will.

They just ruined the movie with that stupid plot twist. It was halfway decent until they did that.

Also, I hated how they made Marco a good guy who was trying to protect Will.. with the way he was acting he didn't do a very good job since he was a jerk most of the time. Why couldn't they keep to the book and have him be Mordred?!

I totally called this... I knew Disney was going to butcher it just like Princess Diaries and Ella Enchanted... and they didn't disappoint, as usual.

Disney should just be banned from ever making a movie adaptation of a book ever again.

reply

Gahh =\ I was so upset when it turned out that Ellie was Arthur.
I mean, no!
Will is supposed to be Arthur! Not Ellie!
Grrrr.
I didn't like the teacher change either,

reply

I didn't know that this was a book till I started the recording of it(DVR) and saw that it said it was based on a novel by Meg Cabot and now I want to read it. It looked very interesting and cool from the commercials. I kind new some of the stuff that might happen because I did this Lord of the Rings Literature study thing and one of the study guides was about Arthurian Literature, so the ''Lance'' being parred with Jen was easy to see where it was going. After everyone's comment up there, I'm glad I didn't read it before seeing it, after the bad version of Percy Jackson from 20th Century Fox, I'm glad I wasn't disappointed again(it wasn't really bad but because it wasn't near enough to the book, the fans won't want them to mess it up anymore with a sequel). I haven't read Ella Enchanted but my sisters have said it's terrible compared to the book. Disney and Walden Media did a great job with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian. Princess Diaries wasn't a DCOM.

reply

The book is a lot better than the movie since the movie took way too many liberties and the added twist at the end wasn't in the book and it did nothing but make most of the movie make no sense. The movie was okay until that stupid twist at the end.

I actually liked Percy Jackson, but then again... I haven't read the books so that might be why. And, yea... Ella Enchanted was an amazing book and Disney completely ruined it with that crap movie... the only reason I even watched it was because Anne Hathaway was in it. Also, while Princes Diaries wasn't a DCOM, it was produced by Disney and they pretty much ruined that one too. I agree about the Chronicles of Narnia, they're pretty good adaptations, but that was a joint effort by both Walden Media and Disney. Disney might not have had all the rights to it, so that might be why the series isn't complete crap.

"Love isn't about finding the perfect person... it's about seeing an imperfect person...perfectly."

reply

Maybe Walden didn't let Disney mess the first 2 Narnia movies but they did City of Ember and by the looks of the trailer, totally changed the goal in Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Percy Jackson & the Olympians is one of my favorite book series ever(behind Harry Potter and Narnia), idk if you trust my opinion or not, but there definitely worth picking up and reading. Rick Riordan(author of Percy Jackson) came out with a sequel series The Heroes of Olympus and it's awesome. One reason The Lighting Thief wasn't has close to the book has it could have been was because Fox only aloud a 2hr time slot with credits for a 375 page book, nowhere near enough.

reply

I haven't read all the books in the Chronicles of Narnia series and one of the ones I didn't read was the "Voyage of the Dawn Treader", but I'm still looking forward to seeing it since I always go into movie adaptation with trepidation since most of the time, I know they're going to not give the book justice (Avalon High was no exception of course, but Disney butchered it more than I thought was possible).

And, I want to read the Percy Jackson series, but I have such a long reading list already that it might be while before I get to it, but I will. I mean, I'm a huge fan of mythology so I like to get my hands on anything to do with it. That is one good thing the movie brought about... it made me want to read the book.

I didn't know City of Ember was based on a book. I've seen the last half of the movie and thought it was pretty good. Guess I'll have to add that to my reading list as well.

"Love isn't about finding the perfect person... it's about seeing an imperfect person...perfectly."

reply

I haven't ever heard of the Percy Jackson & the Olympians till I saw a commercial last November then I got the books for Christmas, read the first 3 in a week and the last 2 in 4 days, so the marketing department did a great job. Voyage of the Dawn Treader and Horse and His Boy were my favorites so, you will be greatly impressed. The City of Ember is by Jeanne DuPrau, there 4 books, all together I think it's 1200 pages. The first one(City of Ember) and the last one Diamond of Darkhold are the best. I just added Avalon High and Mostly Ghostly: Who let the Ghosts Out to mine.

Hey Softballprincess541, because you read the book, I'm guessing you might have read the sequels? Could you give me the names of them and the order so I can request them from my local library

reply

I actually haven't read the sequels... mostly because they're only in manga form and I can't find them anyway. I have heard that they're not very good though.

I do know the name of the sequel series which is under the large title of Coronation; here's the list in the correct reading order:

The Merlin Prophecy
Homecoming
Hunter's Moon

I'm too lazy to search for parts of the movie. Was it true to the book? No. Will they likely do additional parts? Doubt it. Was it meant to be the book re-done? Only to fans who can't budge on their knowledge of what should be - or the author wouldn't have allowed the changes/liberties to be made.

Making those concessions and taking into account the movie only, does Allie make sense as Arthur. Well, it's a stretch, but it's there. You have two Arthur characters. Will - the later in life Arthur who is essentially at the top already, unknowingly in a love triangle, etc. Allie - the unknowing Arthur from the Sword in the Stone with her friendship with the Merlin character, pulls the sword from the stone. Both characters possess a good heart, leadership abilities and inspirational talents dictated through their actions.

Yes, the new Mordred isn't who you want it to be, but I don't remember how the movie portrayed the prophecy exactly. I thought that they twisted it around so that it was believed by some that there was a Mordred character to destroy Arthur or if it was another Order that was searching to destroy Arthur reincarnated. Anyway, consider if the changes could make sense instead of just complaining about them not being the book.

Too lazy to proof this.

reply

It's not the fact that they were untrue to the book that I'm angry; I'm more angry at the fact that they changed who Arthur was since to me, it makes most of the movie make no sense. Also, I saw absolutely nothing of Meg Cabot in that film. It didn't look like a movie that was based on one of her books. The screen writer did a terrible job of writing the script since they didn't bring a single aspect of Meg Cabot's amazing narrative to life in the movie. I wasn't expecting them to be true to the book (since Disney never is), but I was expecting them to be faithful to the source material, and they weren't.

And, really... I was okay with the movie until they changed who the people were at the end, because like I said, it just made me wonder what the point of the rest of the movie was. If they had kept Will as Arthur, Marco as Modred, Mr. Morton (not Mr. Moore) as Merlin (although, I did like the kid who ended up being Merlin) and Ellie (not Allie) as The Lady of the Lake, I would have walked away having finally enjoyed a DCOM.

I think fans have every right to be angry at the severe lack of faithfulness to the source material. I'm not opposed to making changes in movie adaptations because some things that happen in books can't be filmed, but I do expect film makers to keep true to the major plot points of any book in movie adaptions unless the changes make it better... and in this instance, the changes didn't make the story better.

Having only skimmed the Wiki - the book appears to dark to be anything that Disney would actually approach with a TV movie in my opinion.

How would you have felt if this wasn't called Avalon High? The story can be seen as a loose-incarnation of Arthurian legend to the modern era. As a movie to catch the interest of younger children into the legend, it serves the purpose.

Also instead of saying Allie (Ellie) shouldn't be Arthur - look at the movie and see if it makes sense. I only pointed to two obvious examples of how her story ties into to her being the future king of legend. There are probably more if you want to find them. Arthurian legend is one that is known for having inconsistencies between different 'versions.' I like that this is also something that can be conveyed if you want to accept it for that.

Fans are fans, but blame the writer who approved the script supposedly for allowing it. The fan reference can be seen when Moore says, at best I thought you were the Lady of the Lake. Look for differences - don't just say it's not what I expected. Expectations lead to disappointment more often than not.

reply

Yea, I knew Disney wasn't going to be true to the book, I expected that since they're never really true to any book that they turn into a movie. I went into this thinking that it was going to be an okay adaptation at best and it was until the end, at least. I also went into it with an open mind... I had my doubts, but I tried to view this without prejudice, but from the previews I was really only expecting a very loose adaptation of the book which was fine with me. Like, I've been saying, it was the ending and all the changes they did there that made me really dislike this movie.

The ending just ruined it for me. In my opinion, the book was fine without that huge change that Disney made to it. And, I am a little upset with Cabot since I know she approved that change at the end... said so on her official Facebook page. I have sense gotten over that though... I still love her and her books even if she let a poor adaptation of her book be made.

The problem with Ellie being Arthur in the fact that the whole Lance and Jennifer subplot makes no sense and I found it to be so very pointless. Also, I also thought that Modred was related to Arthur in some fashion... what was the connection between Mr. Moore and Ellie that would make that plausable since I would assume that like the legend, she and he would have some blood connection. Unless I'm thinking of something else here which I very well could be since I haven't studied the Arthur legend since high school.

I do remember the Lady of the Lake mentioning at the end which I liked, but to me, it didn't make up for the fact that they changed the ending way too much.

"Love isn't about finding the perfect person... it's about seeing an imperfect person...perfectly."

reply

The Will, Jen, Lance storyline is necessary to contribute to Moore's belief in Will being Arthur (as well as the audience). There is not a requirement for the reincarnation to be the actual half-brother of Will. This would make it simple exact literal history which is what the book addressed I believe, however, the fact is reincarnation is simply the soul of a past person being placed in a newborn body.

I don't recall the movie bringing Allie from Minnesota either which seems to be a part of the book and obviously contributing to her as the Lady of the Lake (go Wiki).

It's not a movie that satisfies people that want the book or a kid friendly adaptation, but the liberties make a bit of sense if you allow them.

reply

I think I would have enjoyed this film if it hadn't been called Avalon High and pretended to be based on the book. As it is, I don't think the writers even read the book and made it up themselves - and their own plot didn't even make sense. I wish someone else could get the rights to the book and make it into a film properly

reply

I agree with Umbkcshah, watching the movie on it's own merits is the only way you can really enjoy it.

I rewatched the movie a second time tonight on NetFlix streaming and saw several points where Allie showed she was Arthur.. here are a couple that stand out.. (forgive if they are a repeat)

1. She and Merlin are friends (and he advises her).
2. When sitting in the tree she said she was all about being fair (aka just) and equal.
3. It is *her* speech that rallies the Knights (even if Will gave it).
4. She pulled Excalibur from the stone (ok, box of props)

I know fans of the book are disappointed with the changes. As a fan of the Sookie Stackhouse books and watching True Blood on HBO I *get* the instinct to want to see your beloved book brought to life.

The best thing to do is consider this a different story told with your favorite characters. By changing the story a tiny bit they can take the story in a totally different direction where you are surprised all over again as the story develops.

I got Merlin's Prophecy from a local library and I found out that it's pretty much a graphic novel, like a comic book which is unfortunate. It's okay but really short, took me about a hour to read the whole thing
