Probably reading too much into this

But I was feeling the first act, "House & Home", could be a metaphor about how the privileged view the poor.

First they spy on you from a distance, learning your patterns. Then when they think you've hit rock bottom, they offer a handout under false pretenses. Now that they have you under their wing (or in their pocket), they find the worst possible way to dehumanize and degrade you. Only to have it come back at them ten times worse for underestimating the human spirit.

Fair comment. I don't share the optimism of your last line though,

No doubt about it - it was quite blatant.

The couple in the episode are predators who despise the poor, seeing them as worthless, fit only to be used/abused for their pleasure. A point of view shared by many to the right of politics, regardless of country. Ever worked in a service industry for the middle and upper classes? You are regarded as a drone, an oik, or a pleb (as Tory MP Andrew Mitchell called some policemen recently).

I love the comeuppance of the man though - not only being told his fate but the fact that it (he) is going to last weeks!

I watched with the audio commentary. The metaphor was deliberate, though not conceived and included as a strong priority. It was just as equally a straight EC comics style shlockathon.
