US release?

Will there be an English-language version of Kon Tiki? If so, will it be released in the US, and when?

reply

It certainly will be released, and most was spoken in English!
It's just had it's first press viewing at the Haugesund International Film Festival today, August 18th 2012, and has it's festival premiere later tonight. The rumour is that the critics loved it.
It's also shown at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 17th to 30th of August, in the programme Special Presentation, which is for films will great International appeal. (Not schedules showings yet.)
This is the first places the film will be sold for distribution, and as Toronto is one of the worlds most important buying festivals; it most certainly will sell to the North American continent already then.

This expedition was world reknown just after the 2nd world war (1947), and the documentary they made of the trip themselves won Oscar the in 1950. The expedition leader, Thor Heyerdahl, which also directed the documentary, was famouus for several expeditions proving small boats could travel from continent to continent much earlier than we one had expected, and show why human dna has traveled across the big seas.

The directors are also known as Hollywood directors, and their last film "Max Manus" was acclaimed and was distributed in the U.S., so this film is very much enticipated.

reply

english language version? no, definitely not. it's showing at tiff this fall, and will certainly have a limited north american release with subtitles intact, but there will be no dubbing and oh god i hope no hollywood remake!

reply

Yes, they have made an international version with english audio (no dubbing). At Tiff they will show the norwegian version though.

reply

It's confirmed that they have made a parallell English and Norwegian version.
The Norwegian version at festivals and the International version in English will be shown at cinema release in the countries where it's bough for release.
The first reviews are great.

reply

The Weinstein Company has won the bidding round for the release in the USA, Britain, Canada and Italy, they have written in a press release 6th of November 2012.

reply

you americans are retarded. haven't you heard about subtitles? i never thought that reading can be hard.

reply

^this. and on top of that like 1/3 of the film is in english anyway.

reply

Thank you,

you added absolutely nothing to this conversation except that you can not stand us stupid Americans. We get it.

So a 100% English version coming out? Excellent!

reply

actually, I would have preferred to see the film in Norwegian with English subtitles, but it ended up being almost all in English. my apologies for not reading. I hope you have not been harmed in any way by my seeing the film in English

It will be released in the US on the 22nd of February, 2013 :)

I just watched this film online (some version circulating) - its very good but I'll have to watch it again when its officially released since the subtitle track was pretty rough on the dialogue. Not only was the translation nonsensical at times, the spoken English is rewritten and jarbled in the subtitles. Why reinterpret the English? :/

Anyhow, even with a bad translation, there really isn't SO much dialogue that you can't follow it. Dubbing IMO is pretty useless; you lose the emotion from the original actor. Agreed that 1/3 IS in English and this film just needs better subtitles for the Norwegian parts.

Thumbs up from me regardless

Kon-Tiki is an average flick tops and as a Norwegian it's just painful to witness the overly-exaggerated acting usually found in Norwegian cinema. Not to mention having to listen to the over-the-top, cringe-worthy English dialect Norwegians usually pull. It is a conscious decision by the filmmakers yet hardly epic filmmaking, and I'm still no fan of Rønning and Sandberg who I don't feel has evolved much as directors since the hideous Bandidas.

All in all, it felt like the movie got an Oscar nod solely due to the Heyerdahl name and possibly VFX cinematography and if you ask me, there are numerous movies out there both from Norway and other countries more worthy of an Oscar nod.

Fear not the darkness, but welcome its embrace.

reply

It was shown at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and was very well accepted. It was my favorite film at the festival.

reply

The film is premiering on limited release for 400 cinemas in the U.S. today, 26th of April, in the English spoken version. Go see it! :)

reply

Actually, it only opens in 3 cinemas today. 2 in NY and 1 in LA. It will open in 50 other theaters next friday, and if it does well in box office, it will be released nation wide.

Fear not the darkness, but welcome its embrace.
