So you mean the sharks? Those aren't real animals. There's actually nothing there most of the time. The amazing visual effects were executed by ILP in Sweden.

Except for the one part where the shark eats the bird of paradise. That, sadly, really happened. The director couldn't believe his luck in catching such a random act of nature and decided to keep it in the film. Oh, and the whale getting harpooned was legit as well, but that scene was needed for historical accuracy. The harpoon was later removed and it was remarked the whale may have even survived.
But yes, the sharks were mainly CGI and thankfully unharmed.

No way. Please substantiate with sources. I just saw it and the bird scene was the worst cgi in the whole flick and to harpoon a protected and endangered and rare whale shark is surely not how they did that
