This is really bad

Since I hate to be the one with vague critique of the show after the first episode, I should probably have some suggestions.

1: Drop the standard three-camera set-up and the audience. Single-camera, no audience, I think that would serve the show much better. No one has been able to use it properly since Seinfeld, and that was only because they were not limited to it.

2: Fire all the writers, get someone who is not interested in making a traditional sit-com. They are cleary not doing the show any favours by making it generic.

3: Lose the sister-in-law. As much as I like Sullivan, she is woefully out of place. Or at least change her Generic-bitch-wife-persona to something less sit-commy.

4: Make the brother not a huge succes. I am not saying to make him a loser, make him anything but a success. Make him a dick, make him the manager of a Dairyhut, make him a bum, anything but a succes. He should not be the opposite of the Son character.

There is something else that I cannot put my finger on that needs to be changed. I fear I might have to give it a second watch to figure it out, but I really don't want to.

All in all, there is nothing here we have not seen a million times before. I predict that it will get 6 episodes. Certainly, it will not last beyond a single season. Of course, that is what I said of both "According to Jim" and "Two and a half Men", some 9 and 7 laughless years ago.

Just go completely rip off Everybody Loves Raymond like they want to, is what they should do.

Hmm, I have to agree with your opinion on all the three shows you've mentioned. But there seems to be a sizeable audience for this kind of stuff, so it's not completely crazy to think that this show might get renewed. Although I must say that while, even though I don't find them genuinely funny, ATJ and TAAHM are occasionally good for a few shallow laughs, so I don't always turn them off immediately when I catch them by chance. SMDS' only funny element though seems to be Shatner being Shatner, which is not enough to support it, in my view. Also, the ratings are dropping like dead birds from the sky. I don't think it will make it, and a 13-episode season is not really enough for the producers to react to audience feedback.

It fails on so many levels -- even the title! -- that I don't think a "fix" is possible.

They never really had a concept going in. Just a list of outrageous things a crazy old man said, and an actor whose having the most bizarre rennaissance since Leslie Nielsen. You need more than that. Characters. Relationships. When you remember "Frazier," do you remember lines, or characters and relationships? Would you have watched it if it was called "Bleep my psychiatrist says"?
