The Civil War was NOT about slavery - This movie lied.

How could it be when:

1. Four northern states ( KY MO DE and MD) practiced legal slavery during the war.

2. A number of northern generals, including US Grant, were slave owners during the war.

3. Lincoln's second VP, andrew johnson, was a slave owner during the war.

You've been lied to. Like all wars, the CW was mostly about profiteering. Also states rights and the tariff issue. Slavery had little to do with it. The north had to justify starting a war that killed 600,000 americans and so they invented the myth that it was about freeing the slaves.

I think you're over thinking the film. It wasn't just about the war, it was mainly about the Vampires

The movie wasn't about slavery either so why talk about it?. It was just gratuitous propaganda from the liberal anti-south hollywood.

The film is about Abraham Lincoln, whether the main plot is about Vampires or not, it doesn't matter. Since the film follows basic history, they are obviously going to include the Civil war and Slavery as that was a big part of his life. To suggest that the film is a propaganda piece is just sad. Not everything in the world has hidden meanings

I'm glad nobody took the bait offered by the poster.

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

reply

Umm the film is full of hidden meaning.
It's the reason why Abraham Lincoln worked well in the film and the story fit.

Slave owners, blood suckers of American (World) history are the vampires in the movie, I'm surprised no one on the forums has noticed the metaphor. Even the last scene shows the current state of affairs and that we still live in a world of vampires, albeit a different kind.

Before I watched the film I asked myself why Abraham Lincoln? As the story develops you can understand why, and its even better with the hidden meanings.

The Civil War was NOT about slavery - This movie lied.

Offensively anti-vampiric, too!
LOL! I'm sure there'll eventually be a "documentary" that will reveal the hitherto unknown vampire element in the Civil War. Until then, this film based on Lincoln's "secret journal" will just have to do.🐭

reply

Not likely since this movie actually mentioned the fact that blacks sold themselves into slavery.

Liberals tend to gloss over that tidbit.

Mr. Hang_All_Drunkdrivers,
the movie would have been much more enjoyable
if it didn't its worst to demonize (literally) the South.

1. While the four states did support slavery, they did not believe in sucession so they decided to stay with the Union instead of leaving with the other slave states.

2. Grant freed one that he owned himself in 1859, before the start of the war. The rest were owned by his father-in-law in a place called White Haven (don't look too much into the name) were he lived, managed and worked on with other slaves in Missori and they were freed at the end of the war.

3. Because Lincoln wanted to show that Republicans and Democrats can work together and felt that Johnson what the best one because he was from Tennesse, a slave state, who did not believe in sucession.

If you look at the last 15 years before the start of the Civil War, both sides were going at each other throats when it came to extending slavery out in the western territories. As for the tariff issue, that was resolved in the South's favor a full year before the start of the war, so how could that be a factor in the starting of the war? And, if it was about state's rights, what state's rights did they felt was in danger of losing?

Lincoln had always said that the preservation of the Union was the top prioity of the war. Both sides were to blame for the war in which they just do not want to listen to each other and view the other side as bad for the country. All of this is just the tiny tip on top of the iceburg because it was such a very complicated and volatile time where nobody knew what will happened.

I know I must be wasting my time with this thinking I could change your mind, but whatever. That's my say in this matter.

The Southern states were VERY open about the fact that slavery was the cause of secession.

States' rights?? But the South fought against state's rights! They objected when they found they were no longer allowed to transport their slavers through free states and when the Western states were admitted to the Union as free states.

This was an interesting and informative thread about states rights and slavery, both major issues of the film's era. I'm glad to see here a adult discussion of film metaphor, themes, and such artistic matters instead of this thread turning into an insult match between opposing camps. You have given me much to interpret and think about to add to the enjoyment of a summer fluff vampire film.
PS....I would like to add that that I have seen many recent Hollywood biased films about the southern states and culture that were propagandist and blatantly admits
to be anti-South. They push the slavery scenario by v.o. statement. I do not accept those film's political views and feel that they are continuing the the hatred THAT Mr. Lincoln and all tried to remedy decades ago. A great shame by not serving the public faithfully.

Of course it wasn't about slavery, you bloody idiot.

It was about the vampires who were threatening to take over America? Didn't you watch the documentary properly?

LOL

Not to mention that the evil South was (possibly) intending all along to bring about never-ending darkness upon Earth by unleashing the vampires.

It is clear that the South well deserved death for their betrayal of humanity. Slavery is certainly the least of the reasons.

Death to the South!!!

Your hypothesis is refuted by your own evidence. You stated

The Civil War was NOT about slavery - This movie lied.

Then farther down in your post you state that
Slavery had little to do with it.

You've just refuted your own assertion.
