Not what I expected

Not what I expected at all

I've read the book, and when I saw this advertised, I thought 'hey I'll give it a go'

I watched the first episode, though, yep ok...hope it goes by the book.
Second episode, thought something seems wrong here
Watched the last episode... NOT like the book at all!!

Not even the right 'killer'... me, my partner and his parents, were not thrilled with the end. Fair enough it's an adaptation, but they could at least get the crucial part of the story correct.

I'm not going to watch Scaredy cat.

reply

Its still essentially the same story (killer is the son of someone we've met, dates the daughter and kidnaps her), so it didn't bother me. If I want Mark Billinghams Sleepyhead I'll read the book.

I'm happy to see it done differently on TV, so its something new.

I am a big fan of the books, I have read them all and I loved this adapation.

The atmosphere of the books was right, the characters matched those that I loved.

The change of the end was brilliantly done in my opinion, wrong footing those of us who thought they knew what was going on.

I can't wait for Scardey Cat now.

I haven't read the books, so spoil it for me. In the book who was the killer?

reply

It was the arrogant doctors son

The storyline about the guy who killed the girls was only briefly metioned, and Thorne certainly didn't kill him and cover it up with Hendricks.

Kinda ruined the Thorne/Hendricks dynamic with that storyline in the show.

Just saw the show; didnt read the book, but enjoyed the movie (I saw it not as episodes, but as a movie in Canada). Anyhow, I didnt like the cover-up plotline either. Cause it means he got away with killing someone, in the end. And he's a cop! They had barely mentioned about the son else I would have figured out that long ago. I think they deliberately left out that info though until closer to the end, but I would have thought Tom would have thought of the son long before that.

This is my signature and I'm sticking to it. lol

reply

Tom didn't think of him because as far as anyone knew, the son had committed suicide years beforehand, and the only person who knew what the son (James?) looked like was Hendricks.

I found this vastly inferior to the book. Okay so they wanted to be different but taking the name of a book, the basic premise and throwing everything else out was... disrespectful. There's no friendly relationship with Holland and Hendricks, changed Brigstocke's character to a woman - oh how modern - and dumped the much more interesting killer of the novel... pretty vacuous. Doubt I'll even bother with Scaredy Cat.

I wonder what Billingham thinks about this adaptation?

I agree about the Thorne/Hendricks dynamic. They're supposed to be best friends, and the whole guilt issue doesn't work with the two of them.

As a whole I did enjoy the adaption, and I am a huuuuge Billingham fan - got all the books.

I'm glad they've got the father in the adaptions too.

I also read the book, and very recently, so during the first episode I was bending my husband's ear all the time by moaning that they hadn't followed the book, I was busy for the second episode so didn't see it all..... much to my husband's relief. However, after watching the final episode I think the way it was adapted was good, not taking anything from the book, I loved it, but I think connection between Thorne and the killer was more believable in the TV Production.
