Betty says that Francesca's work wasn't about absence but about "look what I did" -- a banal comment if ever there was one.

Just afterwards the director cuts to a diary entry that shows that Francesca was frightened by her own thoughts.

Later, Betty says "How did I deal with the guilt? I tried to stay away from it, because there's no way to deal with it."
