'The psychic risk of being an artist'

Why is it traditional cultures don't acknowledge this "risk'?

Is it perhaps because art is woven organically into the fabric of the artists' daily lives, part of the myriad life-affirming things they do and contribute to their communities?

Perhaps George Woodman's statement should have come with subtitles using proper capitalization:

The psychic risk of being An Artist. (As opposed to "doing art.")

Or, perhaps, the psychic risk of turning a life-affirming activity into a life-justifying grab for the brass ring?
