It was funny and different. Congratulating themselves on how well his son had turned out only to find out it was the fat kid with the bad hair. :D

If by "funny and different" you mean "obvious from a mile away", then I agree.

Maybe, but does that really spoil the impact of the scene? The resulting situation worked well in the story, although not well enough to save it. The movie was too badly broken on the whole.
It was dramatically effective, but I don't think the twist was funny. In fact it was poignant.
