Japanese historic clothing

This question is kind of odd. But I want to ask something about the male servants (I assume they were servants) following important people, like Kanemi Sanzaemon, around in the castle. They were all showing their bare legs but hade some kind of cloth tied around the leg just below the knee. I've been searching google but can't find any information about it. I've never seen anything like it so I'm curious about it's purpose/significance. Can't remember seeing anything like it in other japanese movies either.

These are cloths that prevent the servants from muddying up their knees when they kneel. As servants they are expected to kneel and often be knee in the mud.

Thank you! Do you know why I haven't seen it in any other historical japanese movies? Did I just miss it or did they do an exceptional work with the costumes in this movie?

reply

They are rarely depicted, but you can occasionally see them in other films.
If you watch the interesting Kozure Ookami series or Tasogare Seibei/Twilight Samurai you see them there as well.

The detailed intricacies of life in and around the lord's court, such as that raised in this thread were quite fascinating. 🐭
