Clapping in Japanese culture.

At the beginning of the film there is a performance where Lady Renko leads the applause by clapping. Was clapping hands as a sign of approval for a performance part of Japanese culture at this time or it it a Western import out of place for this time? If not it is rather odd that they would have this same custom.
