What mountains did they cross?

The two chaps fight the Germans in 1941, then cross some forbidding mountains to encounter more Germans on the other side. What mountain range is this, that had Germans fighting on both sides of it? Not the Urals. The Germans never got that far. And too early for the Caucasus.

Imaginary mountains. I guess the filmmakers felt it's more dramatic that way.
