Near the end of the movie.

Why didn't the two soldiers just raise their hands up and surrender? A lot of boneheaded moves they made and their luck finally caught up to them in the end.

They just had grenades tossed at them when they were in the bunker. I think they wanted a quieter place to hide out/give up. I think their shared history dictated how they behaved at Normandy.

They weren't in a single battle throughout the whole film in which standing up with hands raised would have spared their lives. They experienced seven years of ruthless killing and execution of prisoners on the spot.

Moreover, they probably had a very limited view of the would-be American captors -- their captors so far had been pretty barbaric and forced them to perform as cannon fodder.
