Theatrical > Extended Cut...

So I've only seen this movie once and it was the extended cut. I have to say, I enjoyed it overall but something did seem missing. Well, last night, my Brother came over to see this for the first time and I decided it best to show him the theatrical, due to it being a new experience for me, And the verdict? WAY BETTER with the inclusion of John's daugher!!! Die Hard's typically have a good dose of humor in them and she provded a much needed "lightening" up of the tone. The beginning scene and their dialog about "not making things worse" was pretty funny and during the phenominal chase scene, I felt the phone call, especially the shot of John saying "Oh, Im looking at him right now" was hilarious and made it a MUCH funner scene without sacrificing the excitement.
The chase being shortened was an improvement as well, because I feel it dragged on just a bit too long making it feel monotonous after a while.

For me, a lot of second viewings yield better results, but this one, It went from an 8 to a 9 and I feel it's on par with a few others in the series. What do you think of the theatrical versus the extended??? And your thoughts on A GOOD DAY in general???

You know, I've missed your sparkling personality.

You know, I think A Good Day to Die Hard gets way too much hate. Now, I don't have the most popular of opinions (I thought Die Hard 4 was the best since the original).

This was on FX last night and could not help switching to it after watching only a bit of the NBA Finals (and I am a huge sports fan).

This was the first movie to be solely written as a die hard movie, not adapted from anything else.
*I thought it had the best action seen in a long time
*The car chase scene was pure epic chaos (in a good way)
*It continued the tradition of him getting closer to his family
*One of the last scenes of John missing with Jack shouting "John! John!..dad!!" was moving, it was the first time I remember this happening in a die hard movie since John was saying his goodbyes to Al while bloody in the bathroom in the original film.
*Great soundtrack.
*The length was not a issue for me, if it was longer it would try to become more deep than it needed to be.
*There was no big bad guy, there was a clever person who knew exactly how to carry out his motives and nearly succeeded. This was a breath of fresh air for me.
*Though we may or may not get a Die Hard 6, the final shot with John and his kids reuniting on the tarmac is a fitting end to the series if this is indeed the end.
*And it had more die hard elements than most of the sequels: John being fish out of water, white tanktop/tee, John slowly losing clothes throughout film, a twist, bigger threat than previous movie, John losing something (his cell phone) that would have given him advantage, like his shoes in first or headache in third.
I could go on an on, but I liked it, it did not try to be something it was not, it tried new things, and it was ENTERTAINING.

While I am at it, my grades for all die hard movies:
*Die Hard 9/10
*Die Hard 2 6.5/10
*Die Hard 3 5.5/10
*Die Hard 4 8.5/10
Die Hard 5 8.3/10

You and me both, brother!!! Die Hard 4 was phenominal and if the original wasn't so Iconic, It might even earn the best in the series! It was so refreshing and fun, and I've seen it three times now, it just gets better and better!!!

As for your critique on part 5, I agree man, I don;t understand the hate Either. The Chase was super epic, even my brother was like "wow, that was one, if not the best, chase scene I have ever seen!" I also really liked the family dynamic and it's why I feel the theatrical is far superior. It's a much more fitting continuation from part 4 and it really is nice to see them united in the end!

it tried new things, and it was ENTERTAINING.

And that's what I WANT in a sequel. While I don't mind, and often enjoy a sequel that is a re-hatch in a way to the original, In a series that has 3+ films, you need to explore some different avenues and this one did just that, while still retaining the SPIRIT of a Die Hard film. I just love all the dialog about "killing all the scumbags" and "Killing bad guys, that's your thing!" I enjoyed it thoroughly and actually find the Die HArd series as a while one of the best all around action franchises. Each film offers great entertainment and when a Part 5 succeeds as much as this one did, yeah, you got a winner! I am very hopeful for a Die Hard 6 and I hope Bruce can pull off gettting the original cast members back. Let's come back full circle and close this thing off right! But you know, if it doesn't happen, Ill be content witht he 5 killer movies we have now!

So the chase is actually shortened in the extended cut. Good move, because in the version I saw, it was ridiculously long.🐭

The chase is actually shortened in the theatrical cut so you must have watched the extended cut because yes, it feels extremely long and it loses some of it's impact IMO.

No way, they sanitized Lucy from the bad ass she was into a calm little girl who waits for the boys to get home. I love Lucy in DH4 but they did her zero justice in the 5th film.

The scene where they talk on the phone is ridiculous. Why would you pick up the phone during a car chase to talk about how you can't talk???

And that ending..... TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!! The Die Hard movies end overlooking the final scene of destruction, not with a cheesy slow motion ending in the sunset.

Either way this movie is not on par, you must be a new fan to the series.

True, but isn't it weird not having her included at all?? It makes it feel like the 4th film never happened and everything McClaine did to bridge the gap with his daughter just didn't matter anymore. Now its all about his son and who cares about Lucy!

Either way this movie is not on par, you must be a new fan to the series.

Nah man, I've been a Die Hard Fan since the early 90's and I even saw Die Hard with a Vengeance opening weekend with my mom. ( I wasn't 18 yet but actually my mom loves action movies too!)

As for your criticism, I can see your point, I just felt that the fifth needed to "lighten" up just a bit as well as having a more connected feel to LFODH. Also, most of the extended stuff just made the film feel super long. I think it was tighter, cleaner, and felt more like it belongs with the theatrical stuff included.

It's definitely not the best die hard film ever made but to me, theatrical at least fits more like a puzzle piece to the entire story versus being the odd man out.
