Congratulations Dame Maggie Smith!

Dame Maggie wins another Emmy!

reply

Not sure why she Won.

She didn't really do much in the Last Season. If anything Laura Carmicheal should have gotten it
She was the true standout in the last season

This, exactly. I can't believe Carmichael didn't get nominated; Dockery was also pretty good the last season (the last three episodes in particular).

Dame Maggie winning an Emmy is not such a surprise, why she won,is though. Of all the vast cast of actors on this show, why is she the only one that gets recognized?

reply

Re-viewing the series, Penelope Wilton has at least as many great moments, but they're all very subtle, with none of the one-liners Smith's been gifted with. As well, she's never been to Hollywood, and nobody there knows her.

reply

It's more of a Lifetime Award - she's old, and they didn't know if they'd have another chance to honor her. She doesn't do that much TV.

Without question it's a stunning performance from an extraordinary actress.... IN any scene no matter who it's with no one holds a candle to Maggie Smith in the show.... With one eyebrow everyone else needn't appear!

I agree about Laura Carmichael. She deserved a nomination. I recently watched the whole series in order. Maggie Smith was the stand out. She certainly got all the best lines and imbued humor into the show. Even if her lines were ordinary, she is so talented that she imbued her lines with panache.

Its quite something the evolution of the actors in the show, you can note the difference in terms of acting of someone like Michelle Dockery and Laura Carmichail in comparison of season 1 and season 6. Sadly, being Mary/Dockery the protagonist, she had to cope with a very poor writing to the end (the suitor saga) and Carmichael had the luck of most interesting plot who could gave her more dramatic moments (Marigold, the fight with Mary and her romance with Bertie Pelham), but those two are great acrtesses. I liked the show, but i also hope that especially the young actors have good careers in the future, Dockery, Carmichael, Sophie Mchshera, James Collier, Leech, etc.

I was not impressed with Jimmy Kimmel's comments regarding the Maggie Smith rule; having to be there to accept the award. It was very insulting. Maggie Smith gets nominated and wins because she is one of the best. She sometimes has quite complicated dialogue with which considerably younger actors would have difficulty.

reply

It's all politics, these award shows. I was reading the reasons why Maggie Smith shouldn't have to be present to receive her award, and they were quite valid. One of them was, that her home base is in England, and why should she come across the ocean to attend an award's ceremony for just one night.

reply

She's 81 and can't be bothered to spend 10+ hours in a plane to please Jimmy Kimmel. I wouldn't cross a street for that.

reply

And Oscars and Emmys are not something that the British care much about. They don't idolize actors like many Americans do.

reply

Well, Eddie Redmayne seemed pretty excited about winning the Oscar . . .

reply

That's awesome!
