need recommendations for other similar shows

I've rewatched Downton so much I have every line memorized. Any recommendations for similar shows?

Btw I just watched Doctor Thorne and it was awful...

In the UK they were marketing this as the Spanish Downton:

But it's so much more everything.

That's the consensus.

I haven't found anything quite like Downton, but you could try The Duchess of Duke Street and The Forsyte Saga on for size.

As far as I'm concerned, you can't beat the original Upstairs, Downstairs. There's not much in the way of sets, but the writing and the acting more than make up for it. After watching that, Downton just seems kinda okay.

I recommend the Anne of Green Gables mini series. It's Canadian, slightly earlier time period, but if Anne & Gilbert and then Anne & Morgan doesn't steal your year, you are broken inside :)

reply

Time then for my semi-yearly recommendation for Flambards, then. Same period, more rural, more of the grit of country life and people. Based on a much loved set of YA novels--you could watch it with a ten-year-old, and enjoy it on different levels. Used to be on YouTube, but the dvd is readily available.

reply

I love Flambards. It's one of those rare series that's (in my mind, at least) better than the books it's based on.

I also need to put in a good word for The Pallisers and The Barchester Chronicles, both of which are based on books by Anthony Trollope. Both star Susan Hampshire in totally different types of roles. The Pallisers has an amazing cast, including Derek Jacobi, Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews, Jeremy Clyde and Penelope Keith. Barsetshire stars Donald Pleasance in a rare good-guy role, along with a relatively unknown actor named Alan Rickman.

I'm also a huge fan of Upstairs, Downstairs.

Try Edward the Seventh (aka Edward the King) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072925/. While not an upstairs/downstairs sort of piece (featuring both master & servant) it is a great miniseries and currently on YouTube.

Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081963/. Ditto, also on YouTube

Fall of Eagles http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0207885/ On YouTube. The best miniseries you never heard of. Fantastic cast and who could resist the story of the fall of the Romanovs, The Hohenzollerns, and The Hapsburgs, all destroyed by WWI.

For movies, you've probably already seen Remains of the Day. If not, see it.

"Edward the King" with Timothy West and, Annette Crosby, was outstanding. Also Charles Dance played, Prince Eddy, who was heir to the throne and was engaged to Princess Mary of Teck, but he died, and his brother eventually became King George V, and he ended up marrying Princess Mary of Teck.

What's this one about Queen Victoria, and Lord Melbourne, that's currently airing on ITV? I do hope it comes to the States. I've read some of the criticisms about it, and one of the main one's is, that Victoria and Melbourne may have been in love with each other. I don't know if I like them taking liberties with Victoria's life, she was devoted to Prince Albert, and I don't believe she had room in her heart to fall in love with another man.

It's been announced that "Victoria" will be on Masterpiece on PBS. I'm not sure of the dates, but they are showing it in PBS previews.

reply

"Victoria" looks to be scheduled for January 2017, according to the PBS app.
Also, I give another vote for "Edward VII" - excellent bio.

Can't blame her for falling for Rufus Sewell in this part. If Victoria was a fictional story, I would love for her and Melbourne to be together. As it's not, we'll see how well Albert does

Hey, debbie, were you on this board a while back, or was that another debbieblackman? Or maybe I know you from somewhere else?

Yeah. it was me. Been on here for years. Had abit of a problem with my PC and had to resign into everything lol

reply

Been on a few other boards aswell

I love Rufus Sewell!!!! In Tristan & Isolde, who in their right mind would give up Lord Marke (RS) for Tristan (James Franco)???!!!

I get my historical fix from Murdock Mysteries. It's not as rigidly accurate but the anacronisms are pretty tongue in cheek. And Murdock is very easy on the eyes.

reply

The Murdoch Mysteries are wonderful. I am parceling out the Season 9 episodes to make them last as long as I can.

reply

As am I, JohnD61. Fortunately living in the Detroit area the series is on in the afternoon (old episodes) and once a week with the new. I went through withdrawal during the Olympics.

reply

I have all 9 seasons on DVD and I dabble in the older ones regularly. I have been amazed at how well the series has withstood 9 seasons without getting noticeably stale.

You don't get MM from the CBC via Windsor, ONT? It starts on October 10th in Canada, but it likely won't make it to the US until January (as per usual). What a shame. I adore MM. It's pretty much my favorite TV show these days.

reply

Yup, CBC. MM is on every afternoon from 2-3pm and Monday nights at 8pm, although it looks like, in October, it moves to 5-6pm M-F and 8pm on Mondays.

reply

The new episodes are at 8 on Mondays starting October 10th. That's according to a tweet I got from @CBCMurdoch.

I wonder if they'll keep that scene stealing baby on as much. Every time they put him in his little jumper he stole the show. I wonder if they make those in adult size.

reply

they gave the baby back to his father. I doubt we'll see him again.

This season takes place in 1904. Just in time for the great fire. Should be interesting, to say the least.

Huh. It would seem that I missed the last show or two. How sad for W&J.

reply

Melbourne is my favorite character in Victoria and Rufus Sewell is stealing the show. I'm watching it more for him

I love the Murdoch Mysteries. Huge fan of Yannick Bisson since High Tide but loved him since Sue Thomas lol. It's great Murdoch is doing so well

Got Netflix US? This is a one shot, but takes that world into the 1950's. Brilliant cast, well done.
