I am British, but don't live there any more. I hate the aristocracy and anything that related to them. There ought to be an alternative ending to Downton Abbey that supposedly took place in WWII. A squadron of German storm-troopers should invade the estate, assemble the cast and gun them all down in cold blood. There should be no survivors, just a river of blood. Sorry fan, but that is how I feel. Death to these make-believe period piece. We hates them, Precious!

shareI would disagree there. To me it sounds like a would-be Socialist who only thinks that killing something is the answer to whatever problem he has. It doesn't really matter what/who is killed as long as the ones being killed have something he doesn't.

Just finished watching the marathon on our local PBS, and I loved the finale. Many of us watched it for the fantasy. It took us out of grim reality for awhile.

I suspect Americans love the fantasy of aristocracy, but in reality won't tolerate it. The closest we came to having aristocracy were the southern plantation owner. One of our beloved military leader, Gen Sherman under our greatest president, Lincoln reduced a huge part of the south to charred cinders.

America is just as much a class-driven society as any other. The haves and have nots, the celebrity and the non celebrity, the rich and the not rich. While we do not have an aristocracy quite like that depicted in Downton Abbey, it is still very much present. Americans worship movie stars, reality stars, pop singers, etc just as much as the British used to put the aristocracy on a pedestal.
DA was just a high class soap opera. The finale could have easily been written for Dynasty or Knots Landings. Pure fantasy. If you go into it not expecting anything more than that, it is quite enjoyable.
