If hsi wife died 19 years earlier, wouldn;t at least one person have know? he was 57 (38 when she died), so don;t you think at least one person would have known? I thought he was a teacher there for a long time.

It was known. It was mentioned by the principal earlier in the movie when she was talking to the boy's dad. The father responded to it by saying that sometimes these people get married to cover up their real sexuality.
