If it's set in the 60s

why isn't the integration of the school a big deal? Wouldn't Andy be picked on since his best friend is black? I'm sorry is that sounds ignorant or rude I don't mean it that way.

ChristianDior,

You're absolutely correct. You know American history better than our own citizens!

In California, it was more socially acceptable in the 60s to integrate all races in the same place. It was more the South, such as Mississippi, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, etc, that advocated segregation.

The homosexual issue, however, was a hot topic back then and was universally panned, no matter how good you were at your profession. Unfortunate, yes, but that's how life was back in the day.

Thanks for clearing that up, I thought the same thing.

It was not just the South. In fact, Boston would segregate its buses up until 1975. It was not until good old flee-the-scene-of-the-crime Edward Kennedy decided it was politically advantageous to stop that. Yes, the South was bad but the North also had its own issues. Parts of California were not as tolerate back then either, especially the Northern part
