Did not work for me - Big G not ugly.

Sorry Hollywood, but your insisting on making presumably "ugly" people look good, was too much for my patience. The same problem existed in "Cousin Bette", but here it's just flagrant. At the beginning the narrator talks about poor Big G being punished by God with huge head and with even huger ears. What? The guy looks fine!

i know, right! he was pretty cute

You obviously do not remember what school was like at that age. a kid with ears like that would have been made fun of incessently. It would have been horrible for him. While I personally did not find him ugly, it was obvious why he would have been made fun of. The point of the film was tolerance for everybody, even if they were a little different than the rest of us.

I agree with Duncan. My fiance has always been good looking but he was definitely picked on for his big ears (which he later grew into).

Big G was also picked on though because he was tall and a Ginger. I thought he was cute but can't deny he had an awkwardness about him. Kids see awkwardness and attack. It's sad but that's what kids do.

I agree, adults can think the kid's cute all they want, but classmates will tear him up every day. That's what they do. They can make a good-looking person feel like garbage.

I think one of the main reasons he was consistently picked on was that he did not fight back, he did not feel he had to. Therefore his imperfections are continually ridiculed to the point that everyone believes him to be a 'freak'.

The few times he does fight is on the behalf of others as he can see they are suffering by it, but the actions of the bullies on him are not worth his reaction.

It takes real bravery to be yourself and that is the central theme of the film.

I have to agree with OP at least as far as that first shot/voiceover.... The voiceover said something like "...too bad God couldn't have given him a handsome face to compensate for his ears..." I was thinking to myself, really? His face looks good enough to me!

Not saying he wouldn't have been bullied, b/c he was kind of awkward and had big ears etc...but he just wasn't as ugly in the face as the narrator was saying. plus he was kinda tall and fit which is a plus

I think he was ugly

No, he definitely wasn't ugly.
But like someone else said, in middle school, the smallest difference sets you apart and makes you a target. It wasn't just his face; it was his height, his ears, his red hair, that he was a geek, the fact that he was kind--just the fact that he was different.

"Do you even remember what you came here to find?"
