Your First Comic Con

Mine was last year i was 18. I have to say it was amazing.
Just being there and seeing the amount of people that go to this thing is amazing. And it's not just inside the convention center.. it was outside too. I definitely was not prepared and didn't know what to expect.
I did however see Torchwood, The Big Bang Theory, and the Walking Dead panels those were worth waking up at 4 in the morning to line up. Oh, I also saw Attack the Block with a Q and A with the director Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright... Was pretty amazing stuff.

I just have to say, if you ever had thoughts about going you will not regret it.. I live in Edmonton, Canada. So it definitely was an expensive trip for me but it was well worth it. And i cannot wait to go again. Had Badges this year but i just unfortunately don't have the money.

So when was your first experience or best memories from Comic Con.

Also, as a side note, is New York Comic Con at all comparable? Because that's what I'm planning to be my next destination.

My first con was 2002 and I've gone every year since. It's like Christmas for us geeks!

Funny story about my first con. I drove down to San Diego the Saturday morning of the con with no prepurchased badge, waited in a line that wasn't even as long as the badge pickup line is now and got right in. Didn't see any panels that year but did get in line a 1/2 hr ahead of time for Elijah Wood's & Billy Boyd's autographs when they promoted "The Two Towers". Everything was so easy just a few years ago!

Now getting a badge is stressful and you feel like you win the lottery when you reach the purchase page after being 70,000 in the virtual waiting room!

Most people say it was the Twilighters that ruined it for us geeks...thanks loads for that...

That's funny as I started reading your comment I had to make sure it wasn't my own comment! Since my first Comic-Con was also 2002 and I've gone ever year (for the most part, missed 2009 and 2007, possibly 2006 as well I can't remember).

I've never been to San Diego Comic-Con but I've been to Chicago Comic-Con many timesĀ and I'm going again in 2 weeks! I can't wait!

Dragonzord! Mastodon! Pterodactyl! Triceratops! Saber Toothed Tiger! Tyrannosaurus!

Mine was 2001. On one hand, it was easier to get in then, but they have learned SO MUCH about crowd control and there is now so much more stuff going on all over the Gaslamp District that I find it a more fun and varied experience (even though we're not going this year... sadface!)
My husband's first was in the 1970's, when SDCC was still in one hotel!
Favorite experience was probably when my husband and I were walking near Hall H and this old man in a wheelchair gestured to his helper to come toward us. He laughed and handed us a flyer and then they rolled quickly off. "Oh my god." I said "That was David Lo Pan!"
And it was. It was James Hong!
Clearly he was looking for the girl with the jade green eyes!

Mine was actually the FIRST ONE in 1970, the original..at the US Grant Hotel. I helped set it up at age 14.

I came to this board to check out what people are saying about the Spurlock film, so I thought I would post in your thread! When I say "set up", I mean I helped set up tables and chairs. It was a wonderful day. All comic fans trading and selling and talking. No movies, really...none of that crap.

I was lucky to have met over the years:

Frazetta
Jones
Wrightson
Corben
Kirby
Lee, of course
Bradbury
Asimov
Adams
Steranko
Eisner

Ah hell...just about everyone from those days. It was a great time to be a collector. I haven't collected in many decades, but it still formed my youth, and the Comic Con at the Grat and then later at the El Cortez. Shel Dorf was a great person to know...

I have gone once at the convention center, for free thanks to meeting the president of the Con, and it was cool...but hardly any old comics! So I watch from afar now.

My first was C2E2 in Chicago. Wait you mean I can just walk up and meet Neal Adams. I went to a lot of panels and it really helped me get on the way to doing my own comic book.
