Please stay away from French cinema. You won't grasp it and it will disturb your tiny frame of reference.

Dude, this is common in French and European film. In no way does this Mock religion, but poses the reality to us all as to how difficult it is to control our thoughts and bodies. Or rather pleasures of the 'flesh', be it food, sexual desire or whatever. When one surrenders to the religious reality of that time period, following the path of Jesus was still fresh in the minds of all folks for there was not much hope in the world. And as great as religion can be, MAN is weak and cruel to one another in any situation be it on a daily basis over food or falling prey to pleasures of the flesh and in this dramatization it is about sex.

Wow, that is so profound and insightful. So have you ecer succumb to the lustful temptations? ;p

You say that like mocking superstitious tripe is a bad thing.

The novel it's based on, published in 1796 (that's right, over 200 years ago) is a sharp criticism of Catholicism and the concept of chaste clergy. It shows that suppressing natural human urges leads to them being twisted and perverted. Relevant today with the exposure of the clergy abuse that's been ongoing in various churches for years.

Facts need to come before certainty.

There you go. I was right after all. Thanks for the facts, mcornett . ;)

Glad to be of help. Catholic-bashing was common in many Gothic novels of the period, but at least THE MONK's bashing had a legit point about the suppression of natural human sexuality. Many others just viewed Catholicism as evil, period.

It's a good book, by the way. Still readable today, if a bit creaky at points, created quite a scandal in its day. The author's name is Matthew Gregory Lewis, who was quite a character himself.

I was surprised Valerio really did have sex with Ambrosio when he was sick from that insect bite, I thought it was his imagination.

reply

Hahaha! You're so funny, OP!

I was getting really frustrated with this film, as it was so bloody t-e-d-i-o-u-s, but then, in the last 10 minutes, everything went from 0 to 60 in about 5 seconds and the denouement was really rather good.

Definitely worth another watch, I think.

Lol, finally someone got my tongue-in-cheek post.

Luckily you didn't give the story away, as i haven't actually seen the movie, to be honest....;p

@ jerry - well, it was obviously that, so I was surprised to see peeps getting on their high horses about it!

Do watch it - it's definitely worth the time, even though, as I said, I was getting very like "when the feck's something going to happen?"

Do you often comment on films you haven't even seen??!

reply

Yes, all the time! I also reply to posts that aren't directed to me as if they are.

It also shows FEMALE full frontal nudity. Deborah Francoise is not the same caliber of an actor as Vincent Cassel perhaps, but she looks better naked. . .

People seem to spend a lot of time making "tongue-in-cheek" posts about movies they haven't seen on this site, but this is actually a pretty good movie. The 1796 novel preceded "Frankenstein" and "Dracula" making it one the very first gothic horror movies. It also probably has SOME connection to the popular European "nunsploitation" genre. Cassel is always pretty good and Francoise is a real cutie (check her out in "The Page Turner" and "Student Services" if you get a chance).

Excellent post, OP!

Made my laugh of the day (great film BTW).
