Wow...this movie's flopping big-time!
Sad.
All reports say that this movie is in league with John Hughes '80's teen classics, like "Sixteen Candles".
And yet...it made less than 2 million opening night.

Sorry to disappoint but I watched this for work. Comparing this to any John Hughes movie is like comparing a child's chalk drawing to Picasso. This movie is getting what it deserves. It is awful and never should have been green lit.

I saw it during the matinee which just went up to six dollars form five and I can tell you that Disney made exactly $24.00 in ticket sales at that particular showing at that theater. Yes there was only myself and three other people. I was surprised I thought it would do much better business then that. I will admit that is by no stretch of the imagination a masterpiece but I felt it did have some charm. I liked Aimee Teegarden and Thomas McDonnell's chemistry and there were some cute moments mostly with Nicholas Braun's bumbling attempts to find a prom date-ANY prom date.
I think the problem is that while the young cast is likable it feels pretty much like a Disney Channel movie in terms of production values. That probably would have been the better venue for it. But it is kind of shame it's apparently going to tank because it does have modest charm as I said.
Modest is a stretch. I saw it yesterday and there were two families of three, myself, and three tween girls. The only one who laughed at all was a 35-40 year old father in the one family. The direction was brutal even for a Disney TV movie, the dialogue was terrible, there was no story to speak of, and the mid 20 to 30 year old actors playing the teens showed why their careers are all stalled. In case you didn't notice, Nicholas Braun starred as a teen in Sky High several years back and the fact that he's still playing a teen, only now he's way older and he has a character part, says it all. The Lacrosse captain had a part as an 11 year old in T2 which came out in 1991 for crying out loud. His IMDB page doesn't give his birth date (wonder why that is) but he's obviously somewhere between 30 and 35 or approximately the same age as Angelina Jolie.
The saddest thing is that John Lassester and the Pixar guys are keeping the studio afloat and they preach story, story, story. Maybe the live action development team needs to go over and take a tutorial on how it works. Because they haven't a clue.

The film had a very low budget of $8 million and already made half of its production budget back even though it is considered to be a bomb for a Disney movie.
shareI knew that this movie wouldn't do well but I didn't think it would flop THAT hard! I thought for sure all the pre teen kiddies were going to go see it...
shareIt's even worse on TV. Dawson's Creek anyone? They were lucky the guys weren't ALL bald when it ended.
shareGinger Rogers (born 1911) was 31 when she played a pre-teenager (a 12 yr old) in the film). "The Major and the Minor" (1942).
Yes I did know that Nicholas Braun was in "Sky High" and I've gotten so used to twenty somethings playing teens that I am willing to suspend disbelief. I just happened to find his geekish awkwardness mildly amusing and was therefore midly entertained. I don't even remember the Lacrosse captain and will take your word for his age and I agree that's ridiculous. But as I said I don't remember him at all. As I said this is in no way shape or form a great movie but as I said I thought it had some modest charm (that's my opinion so I really don't see how it could be a "stretch" when it's just my opinion.) I just dodn't think it was as terrible as you clearly did. Different strokes for different folks right?
shareTHe Lacrosse captain was the African American guy who cheats on his girlfriend. He was one of the main characters and he was waaay old. I mean once you're old enough to have a kid in high school you shouldn't be playing a high schooler. It's creepy.

Okay I have to say I thought you were talking about someone else and not the character of Tyler that's what got me confused. And you're right that is creepy. Especially when you take into account the fact that Danielle Campbell who played Simone (the sophmore he was cheating on his girlfriend with) really is only sixteen. Who was the casing director for this and what the hell were they thinking?
sharegood! maybe the next high school movie will be about getting hurt by cheerleaders
The weekend estimate is in...5.1 million.
Disney spent 30 million in promotion...ouch!
Actually, it's 5 even. I'm pretty sure it won't even break 5 when the actuals come out. Don't worry about the 30 mil in promotion, this sucker is losing money on the print costs at every location. I'm guessing the they're gonna lose 1000 to 1500 a pop at every theater BEFORE publicity costs.

Disney made a big mistake pitting this against Fast Five................this was
strictly no contest,to be honest!!!!
In all fairness, it was only made for 8 million. It will certainly make its budget back but it wont be remembered. It doesn't look that good so I can understand skeptics are probably waiting to rent this. The problem is, its a teen movie that was made for tweens. Teenagers don't want to see it because its childish and unrealistic while parents aren't sure if they should let their kids see it because its a teen-prom-movie.
shareUm, one problem with your premise. Disney has admitted spending over 30 mil on advertising, and it costs about 3000 in print costs for all 2700 sites it played at this weekend. And of course Disney only get about 60% of that 5 mil. Add it all up and Prom easily loses close to 50 mil.

I wasn't expecting record breaking numbers but I figured every tweenaged girl in town would want to see it.
