Didn't have a prom, Didn't need one

Attended Mid-Del Christian School (now Destiny Christian School) in Del City, Oklahoma, class of 1986.

Anyone else go to a high school that was promless like mine?

reply

I skipped Prom too, for all it is is a stupid pointless dance that you spend hundreds of dollars on some crappy cloths that you only wear once, but maybe it is because I am a guy and I personally detest all dances homecoming and prom alike.

Went to a Christian school in Maryland. Did not have a prom but we had a dinner which was lame. Did not really care about having a prom or not.

Well, that's great. Glad you could lose it with somebody other than your eventual husband, wife, or other lifetime commitment, because that's a requirement now.

reply

Hahahahahah, is that Ron Artest's new name?!?! Hilarious!!!

I skipped prom too.

It really is just another stupid, counterproductive ritual that an affluent and rudderless society imposes on its kids. Seriously. And Disney makes millions off all the false intensity and obsession with this sort of thing.

reply

Well its not so much a ritual but a tradition carried on by generations and some schools go more over the top then others.
In all honestly I didnt think my prom was that great, but I was never that into school dances and what not. The after party was the best part, which is also a tradition following prom.

I guess I'm talking not so much about the prom itself (which can be conceived in any way the people who run it want it to be) as all the expectations, sexual and otherwise, that go along with it in popular culture, and how it becomes one crystallizing aspect of the dating culture that dominates American society, the whole ethic of date this one, date that one, sleep with this one, sleep with another, sleep with 20, or a hundred, and then "settle down" with somebody and both of you can try to forget all that. You don't _have_ to think of a prom that way or act that way on prom night, of course, but a lot of teenagers think they have to, or can't think of a reason not to, or think they'll be freaks if they don't, and all that.

And from the previews I just saw evidently the show Glee as well.

reply

Ahh, I don't know if you heard but if there is no prom the terrorists have won. So clearly your views mean you are unpatriotic and support terrorists.

reply

Because my Christian school was so small (9th - 12th grade was about 50 people), we had a prom every year for the 9th - 12 grades combined. Four proms - and they were always very fun :-)

Well, it wouldn't be impossible to run something called a "prom" in a way that wasn't trash-cultured up and all that, for sure. I'm just talking about the way proms and other aspects of mass trash culture are swallowed hook, line, and sinker by teenagers who would never let any adult, teacher, authority figure, or whatever coerce them or force them into such obedience.

Considering my high school was a combination of homeschool and Running Start (a program in my state that allows high school students to attend community college for free), prom wasn't really an option. Not that I would have gone even if I'd gone to normal high school.

EH my idiot sister made me go. I didn't see the point but tired to have some hopes on it. I didn't go crazy though like some girls, borrowed a nice dress and did my own hair. The dance was a joke, the DJ sucked. I'm pretty sure I would have had fun staying out home with my friends watching movies rather than at a dance with people I don't really care for. Prom is over blown I think in the end it really is another dance just way more money and time.

reply

Homeschooled during high school so no Prom available not that I wanted to go to it anyways.

I went to both my proms. I didn't feel pressured to go but since I skipped all ballgames and homecomings, I figured I would go to some sort of school function and they were alright. Prom king and queen were boring though since it was always a couple that came together rather than a selected matching.

My school had a prom, but I didn't go to it. I had no interest in paying a $10 entrance fee and god knows how much money for a suit I'd wear once and never again just so I could stand around and drink punch while being surrounded by *beep* I hates and being forced to hear *beep* music. Instead, I stayed home, watched a marathon of "Lockup", and masturbated.
