Had No idea Zahi was such a prick!

I've seen this guy on various programs over the years but i had no idea that he was such a premadonna. Get over yourself Zahi! Plus i'm ashamed of the History channel for putting this crap on. Horribly scripted with some pretty bad acting. Totally takes away from any coolness that the idea of the show once had. Only thing that would save this show now is if Zahi contracted some terrible mummy curse and he died a horrific death.

um he was always like that, the only time you hear about him from other archeologist, is when they talk about how irritating and overbearing he is. This is one of the reasons why I don't watch Egyptology shows anymore, because Zahi is hovering over everyone being annoying.

reply

An Archaeology professor I met that had worked with him in the past said that Hawass is even WORSE in person.

reply

Archeologists in Egypt even hope they don't find something really important. Because the moment that happens Zahi comes with a team of cameramen and pretends to have done all the work.

reply

Fascinating topic but uninteresting host.

Very full of himself.

I agree completely, I've lost about 98% of the respect I used to have for him.

Again, I agree, this seems like it was a great concept, but, somehow, it went off track.

Zahi is a complete douche. One of my friends lives across from the Great Pyramid and says that Zahi closes the streets and pyramids all the time on a whim-- when people have saved for years to visit and go in only to find that at the last second he decides to close the pyramid for some stupid reason. Or no reason at all.

Her dad used to work with Zahi and quit his job b/c he could not handle Zahi's crap any longer.

I lost respect for him when they were raising the stone from Isis' temple out of the water. All he cared about was getting it up in time for the press. It wall about the press. It's archeology and things can go wrong.

I was surprised at how irritating he is. The first time I ever saw or heard of him was when Josh Bernstein did "Digging for the Truth" (miss that show) and he seemed very respectful then.

I'll still watch the show even though there is too much "drama". Egyptian archeology has always fascinated me. I wish I could be a fellow even though I have no background. Going into all the tunnels and caves would be awesome!

He wants, SO BADLY, to be famous. It is actually quite pathetic. He wants nothing more than to have students learn about him as some supposedly important figure in world history. He is an egotistical, arrogant, DB.

I'd like to see an episode when a big stone obelisk falls on him or something. Or maybe an episode where they corner him and tase him for an hour solid.

I have to admit that I am disappointed to find this out about him. At first I thought it was just the way THC was portraying him. But the guy is much too well educated for that. The fact is that he was educated in the West and he knows how to work the West. Maybe this is why he was respectful around Bernstein. At least, that guy has a degree in Anthropology and DIGGING FOR THE TRUTH is light years better than any of the 'Reality' crap that Dubuc & Co. have thrown at the public for the last three years. But even Zahi has met his cynical and professional match in THC. With this program, it's not the archaeology that counts, it's the DRAMA. Don't think for a minute that Zahi hasn't figured that out. If you're really interested in archaeology, THC would have you tune in to PICKERS. What a joke! This might as well be ICE ROAD TRUCKERS with sand instead of snow and ice. All of History Channel's soap opera 'Reality' programs are the same. And they're all bad - no matter who they feature on them.

Now that the first season of "Chasing Dummies" is coming to an end, many of us had hoped that it would go the way of "Sliced" or of "Madhouse." These were other so-called "verite-documentaries" that had nothing do with History (or documentaries either for that matter) that could not even hold the interest of the current target demographic. That IS saying something because THC is actively going after those people who are too lazy or too stupid to pick up the remote. It seems that "Sliced" had a living will and no extraordinary means were used to try to keep it alive. "Madhouse" died a slow and painful death due to the desperate efforts by its "passionate supporters" to keep it alive. But THC missed the target with that demographic and when the program died, those viewers did pick up their remotes and found REAL NasCar programming elsewhere. So what's going on with "Dummies?" After a season full of Drama and little archaeology, comments from viewers (who are still allowed to post) on the THC message boards have run overwhelmingly negative. What was touted as a History "Verite-documentary" was based on the presence of internationally known Zahi Hawass and the opportunity to witness first hand how real archaeology is done. Unfortunately, this was done with the usual Nancy Dubuc Soap Opera ethic and the result was pathetic. First of all, as the title of this thread implies, it made Zahi look like a jerk. He may be one; but if I had been hired for my own expertise in my proper profession and then found out that I was only there for the DRAMA, I would probably act the same way. The key word here is "act." Without a doubt he has a contract; he probably has a script as well. Second is the matter of the Drama, itself. This has been so bad and so cheap that it has become more like a failed Comedy than a Drama. The most memorable moment of the entire season has been the imfamous urination in the pyramid. This was not Drama or Comedy. It was not archaeology either. It was just bad. However, there was a hidden element of "Verite" here that I think I should document. It was a good sign of the depth to which THC has sunk in an effort to re-invent itself for a new, loyal and consistent audience that it has not yet found.

Still thrashing about trying to find that audience, we might well have expected the dummies to put the mummies back in their coffins, shake off the sand and come home. Not so fast! Are we supposed to think that Zahi came to this program as a matter of charity? Whatever his personality, are we supposed to think that he is cheap? Don't bet on it. Just because the production and Drama are cheap does not mean that THC has not sunk a ton of money into this. And that is a "Verite" that has to be faced. Furthermore, contracts have to be fulfilled or bought out and that, too, can be an unpleasant "Verite." So, I think you can expect to see someone chasing a mummy, or being chased by one, across the Egyptian sands next season. In preparation for this, the shill brigade has been brought out to post exciting and positive remarks in the hope that no one will notice what came before. One thread even suggests a similar program to Sumeria. It goes so far as to float the idea that the Iraqi government would help pick up the tab in hopes of stimulating tourism. This is a stroke of genius! Ms. Dubuc should lead the expedition herself with her own most "passionate supporters." They should use a large van, brightly painted with the History logo and attach a large American flag. Then, just maybe she will find out the true meaning of "Verite."

He is indeed a very rude man.

Wonder how he got into the position he's in?

Yes, there’s no question that Zahi is a total douche. However, I wonder if at least part of that is due to the fact that he’s getting older, sicker, and running out of time (professionally), and so is constantly in a rush against time.
