Now that the first season of "Chasing Dummies" is coming to an end, many of us had hoped that it would go the way of "Sliced" or of "Madhouse." These were other so-called "verite-documentaries" that had nothing do with History (or documentaries either for that matter) that could not even hold the interest of the current target demographic. That IS saying something because THC is actively going after those people who are too lazy or too stupid to pick up the remote. It seems that "Sliced" had a living will and no extraordinary means were used to try to keep it alive. "Madhouse" died a slow and painful death due to the desperate efforts by its "passionate supporters" to keep it alive. But THC missed the target with that demographic and when the program died, those viewers did pick up their remotes and found REAL NasCar programming elsewhere. So what's going on with "Dummies?" After a season full of Drama and little archaeology, comments from viewers (who are still allowed to post) on the THC message boards have run overwhelmingly negative. What was touted as a History "Verite-documentary" was based on the presence of internationally known Zahi Hawass and the opportunity to witness first hand how real archaeology is done. Unfortunately, this was done with the usual Nancy Dubuc Soap Opera ethic and the result was pathetic. First of all, as the title of this thread implies, it made Zahi look like a jerk. He may be one; but if I had been hired for my own expertise in my proper profession and then found out that I was only there for the DRAMA, I would probably act the same way. The key word here is "act." Without a doubt he has a contract; he probably has a script as well. Second is the matter of the Drama, itself. This has been so bad and so cheap that it has become more like a failed Comedy than a Drama. The most memorable moment of the entire season has been the imfamous urination in the pyramid. This was not Drama or Comedy. It was not archaeology either. It was just bad. However, there was a hidden element of "Verite" here that I think I should document. It was a good sign of the depth to which THC has sunk in an effort to re-invent itself for a new, loyal and consistent audience that it has not yet found.
Still thrashing about trying to find that audience, we might well have expected the dummies to put the mummies back in their coffins, shake off the sand and come home. Not so fast! Are we supposed to think that Zahi came to this program as a matter of charity? Whatever his personality, are we supposed to think that he is cheap? Don't bet on it. Just because the production and Drama are cheap does not mean that THC has not sunk a ton of money into this. And that is a "Verite" that has to be faced. Furthermore, contracts have to be fulfilled or bought out and that, too, can be an unpleasant "Verite." So, I think you can expect to see someone chasing a mummy, or being chased by one, across the Egyptian sands next season. In preparation for this, the shill brigade has been brought out to post exciting and positive remarks in the hope that no one will notice what came before. One thread even suggests a similar program to Sumeria. It goes so far as to float the idea that the Iraqi government would help pick up the tab in hopes of stimulating tourism. This is a stroke of genius! Ms. Dubuc should lead the expedition herself with her own most "passionate supporters." They should use a large van, brightly painted with the History logo and attach a large American flag. Then, just maybe she will find out the true meaning of "Verite."
