Director has a hang-up about Happiness.....

Wow! This director sure has a problem with his male gay couples having any kind of happiness---longterm. What IS his problem?

His film preceding this? Same situation:

As someone who likes a good, romantic gay love story, I've had enough of this guy's work.....and his efforts, in every movie, to make some weird kinds of visual / graphic statements about the way Asians (or perhaps more specifically, Hong Kong citizens) live their love lives.

You've only seen two of his movies? I've met him a few times and had the chance to speak with him. A lot of his inspirations are based on his own depression from the past as well as stories from other people.

Have you seen "Love...Actually Sucks"?

Gay relationship ends up failing, incest relationship ends up failing, newly weds' relationship ends up failing, a younger man in his early twenties falling for a mid 40s woman and that relationship ends up failing. And obsessive heterosexual relationship also failed.

Lesbian couple....um, well, they seemed to have no real resolution and no real conflict. But they also barely had any screen time.

His newest film "Voyage" is mostly in english and mandarin, and explores the suffering suicide brings to everyone (a string of many suicide stories, most of them inspired by true events), examined by a psychiatrist who wants to understand all his patient's mindsets.

Yes there is also a gay relationship, however this film focuses on suicide's effect on relationships from family, to friends, to lovers.

As for weird kinds of visual/graphic statements, it's his rebellion against China's slow creeping control over the content of films from Hong Kong. I don't think a lot of it is necessary in his films, but he's not doing it to make statements about Asians. There are a lot of non-asians in the film Voyage.
