how sheltered are these guys?

I'm not even particularly aggressive and I found myself annoyed to all hell that these guys waited as much as they did to defend themselves. I might be too used to slasher films, but the guy beat up the guy with the dog...he didn't shoot, stab, or bludgeon him...he beat him up. 2 on 1 is extremely good odds, particularly when you have it on good authority you'll be killed anyway.

Even if you're a pacifist, as numerous people have said you just need to run in all directions. Only one of you needs to make it. If you're trying to signal an alarm, first off, carry your phone in your pocket, Jesus Christ. It's one in the morning out in the middle of nowhere...let's leave our primary means of communication elsewhere...And you don't need fire to set off sprinklers. All you need to do is mess with it just a bit, particularly the bit of liquid just inside, to set them off.

The biggest thing is its one big metaphor for indecision, given the fact that they stood around worrying over what to do when literally anything but waiting there would have been a better answer.
