Why is she holding a tennis ball?

Throughout the movie, Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) is seen holding a tennis ball in her paralysed hand. Why is that? I thought it was to help the actress to better portray a paralysed hand, but it seems too cheap a trick to be believed. Moreover, it would be an obvious editing mistake that must have been noticed before releasing the film, so I think the reason must be another. Anyone?

Probably on the advice of her doctor, to exercise her hand with, a sort of basic physical therapy in the same way Daniel gives her legs in one scene.

To keep the hand somewhat open, otherwise it would collapse into a tight closed fist and the fingernails end up digging into the palm of the hand.. which can get pretty horrific.
