I had such high hopes for this film, as I enjoyed Drive so much and Neon Demon even more.
But this was not good - over-stylised with insufficient dialogue (ok there doesn't have to be much) and gratuitous violence. And an absolutely awful performance from Kristin Scott Thomas (what was SHE doing in such a role??)
It just didn't hit the spot.
And I shelled out Euro 17 for a 'limited edition' uncut Blu-ray DVD! What a mug.
I thought it was great. There is little dialogue, but enough to keep me interested. The two main characters are both men of few words. The backstory unfolds through dialogue. The mother was sexually abusing her sons. Both of them suffered some psychosis from this. One abused women eventually killing and raping an underage girl. The other killed his father with his bare hands and fled to Thailand. God punished them all, but forgave only Gosling's character because he spared the life of Chang's (God's) daughter.
NWR uses symbolism in place of or in addition to dialogue to tell a deeper story than what is on the surface.
This was way better than Neon Demon.
