Why are people so down on this?

I can see why people are a bit upset over it.
Fine you can't play as Snake and it might not be AS stealthy as the previous titles.
But If you actually watch the interviews they explain that there is stealth in the game it is just a different style of stealth.
From what I gathered you basically hunt the enemy by stalking them.
Does this not sound like stealth to you?
Anyway I'm really looking forward to this game and I hope people will give it a chance.
Would also like to see your thoughts on this. Fire away.

Because some of us just don't like Raiden ... he isn't Snake ;)

reply

Fair point.
Maybe he isn't as cool as Snake, but that doesn't mean this will be a bad game.
Metal Gear Solid 2 is my favourite in the series and the majority of the game you play as Raiden.
But everyone has an opinion. I'm not going to judge you. :)

My first game in the series was when MGS came out for the PS & it still is my favorite game in the series even after I've played them all. Metal Gear for me is Solid Snake & always will be. I fell in love with the character since the very first time I played the game & he's still to this day my all-time favorite video game character.

I'm not saying Rising won't be a good game, at least for some people ... Just for me, its not MGS without Snake.

reply

I do not really care if Snake is in it or not. MGS4 was a good retirement for him. Let him live his last days in peace. OK, you could tell stories about what happened in-between the earlier games.

I am guessing this will be more like MGS meets Tenchu.

reply

Well said, Snake's time is done and nothing is wrong with that.

reply

Despite my expectations, I liked Raiden in MGS4...Apart from when he was fighting armless, that made me laugh.

The makers have expressed they want this to be separate from MGS, I'm open to it...But I don't like the idea of calling it "Solid" if he's not in it...MGR would be better.

Yeah I agree his sword in teeth technique was laughable.
I think Metal Gear Rising sounds like a decent name. Of course I doubt they will call it that. But I'v always liked Raiden even in MGS2. It annoys me when people say he is a "whiny" character. The people talking about Raiden do alot more whining than he did in MGS2. Thinking about it I hardly ever remember him whining at all. I'd like to see an example.
But yeah I completely agree with Hades_Tigro.

Well, dont hold your hat.It looks like their will be an actual MGS 5 in the future i heard GDC 2011 from HIPHopGamer and he is pretty credible. He even has a program on Playstation home. Now he didn't say that it will be a direct Sequel to Mgs4 he just said a sequel was coming and he wasnt talking about Metal Gear Rising. So to me it must be a Sequel.Since Rising is a Prequel it is a safe bet that a legit Mgs5 will be a sequel. But it's not confirmed but he said from a liable source expect something by GDC 2011 not E3

reply

Metal Gear Rising ended up being a sequel, but a spin-off.

Metal Gear Solid 5 was a prequel.

Some valid points here, albeit I'm skeptical about the Snake loyalists: technically Solid Snake is absent of about half the saga! And these games were awesome nonetheless, I'd go out on a limb and say that MGS3 or Peace Walker had better gameplay, writing and characters than GotP (to each his own, though). What makes MGS so special is the freedom to play it brutal or subtle in the same game. Each episode introduced more and more weapons, and with them the increasing temptation to go berserk. So scaling it back weapon-wise and speeding up the stealth might not be such a bad idea. Moreover, we haven't seen the dashing, jumping, climbing or hiding mechanics yet, same for Raiden's weird sheath and subweapons. My main gripe with Raiden in MGS2 was how he played exactly like Snake, with no added moves or velocity. No new feature like CQC either. With the series splitting into two protagonists and two kinds of stealth, that might change for the better, Fingers crossed...

reply

I wouldn't say he was missing in quite that much but there's definately 3 games he's not in ... MGS3, MGSPO, MGSPW ... am I missing any others? ... The Acid games I didn't count because isn't those kind of like a different universe? I have them both but never really played them. lol ... and then of course he's in the 5 other MG/MGS games :)

reply

I haven't played the Acid games, actually. The only non-canon episode I ever played was on Game Boy Color - pretty decent IMHO. But for the needs of my argument I counted MG, MG2, MGS and MGS4 for Snake, as opposed to MGS3, Portable Ops, MGSPW and Rising for Naked Snake and Raiden. Since MGS2 contains both Snake and Raiden I left it out of the equation.I know it's polarizing among fans (not only in Metal Gear's case) but I for one love when creators take chances and introduce new protagonists or playable characters. In hindsight, I think not being the lead in MGS2 did a lot to reinforce Snake's badassness, especially the contrast with Raiden. I hope Snake will make an appearance in Rising not just for the sake of fan service, but because if Raiden is made more interesting then they'll have to follow suit for Snake. Besides, the katana opens some crazy perspectives for boss battles!

reply

Ok, I thought I was forgetting something! ... I also have the GBC game ... Didn't play that one much though.

I don't see how Snake could be in Rising since it was clear in MGS4 he hadn't seen or heard from Raiden since MGS2 ... BUT ... as you say, he could be thrown in there so Kojima can give a fan service.

reply

Wait a second. I thought Kojima didn't have a part in creating this particular chapter in the MGS line. Was I misled?

reply

I don't think he did ... we were just basically naming all the games with the Metal Gear title ... not necessarily games that are actually chapters in the storyline.

reply

@ lilbit318

I played MGS4 over the holidays, and it's not that obvious Snake never heard of Raiden again after MGS2. When Raiden pops up Snake says something like "I used to work with that guy. He saved Sunny from the Patriots..." and only then mentions Jack's disappearance that led him working with Eva. No mention of how Sunny ended up with Snake, nor how and when exactly Raiden disappeared and was turned into a cyborg.

There could be a Snake cameo along those plot lines, definitely. I just wish it's meaningful and cleverly integrated, and not just pointless fan service a la Sam Jackson in Iron Man.

reply

Yeah, I didn't think about that at first when I originally posted ... your right, Sunny showed up with Octacon & Snake somehow after MGS2 so they had to of seen each other at least once after that.

reply

On a side note, the Rising creators were recently on a research trip in the US. And they settled for an Army base in Nevada. Given that Area 51 is said to be where Raiden found Sunny, I wonder if we're gonna play that part in the game. Would be sweet.

reply

I think thia game would be good but they got the title wrong, the whole point of the Solid in Metal Gear Solid is for the character Solid Snake. Without him it isnt Metal Gear Solid. The game should be called Metal Gear: Rising. I will still be buying it and from the videos i have seen it looks quite good

reply

Because they turned Raiden into Dante. He's SO COOL now!

I love the MGS franchise & MGS2 was the first of the series that I played, so I didn't have the "hey, where's Snake?" issue & perhaps because I'm a woman, I really enjoyed Raiden (although I will admit the Jack & Rose conversations got a bit annoying - I just want to save the game, darn it!)

I am totally buying this game & if there's a midnight release, I'll stand in line. But, I'm not entirely happy with it due to the storyline that they now have:

When MGS4 ended, Snake was going to live out the rest of his shortened life & die peacefully and Raiden was going to become a husband & father and stop running from a normal life. I kind of wanted the next installment to follow Johnny (Akiba) because his story could still continue, where I felt Raiden and Snake's should've stopped.

But now Raiden is head of an army or whatever & he's becoming "Jack the Ripper" again, which, don't get me wrong, sounds really cool. But, I really don't see how he can balance intense insanity with a loving family, so that means the ending of MGS4 was a lie. All that crap Rose put him through (yes, I blame her LOL) & it doesn't even work out in the end? The only acceptable explanation (to me) would be if Rose & John are killed.

& I would love to see Snake, but only in the cut scenes as a mentor or flashbacks. He's fought so hard for so long, it's time he's had a little peace. Nothing lasts forever, even fictional video game characters!

Frankly for me i think Kojima and co should have done a spin off game with Meryl and Rat Patrol Team 01, i think the team based stealth and action would have made for a good story. I am going to get this game when it hits the shelves and as for Snake i think he is done! I love Snake, coolest CG character ever but part of MGS4 was Kojima telling us Snake is old news, an old soldier who has had his day and that was part of what MGS2/4 was about Snake passing on what he has learned to the younger generation so they may continue without him. Unless they invent some complicated story as to how Snake has reversed the problem of his extreme ageing problem then i doubt we will see Snake again. Some people just need to let go, everything and everyone has its time, and if nothing ended, nothing would get started!
