Are You Buying This Game?

Just curious if anyone here is not planning on buying this game? From what I've seen of it, it just isn't a MGS game to me ... it feels like Kojima is still upset from MGS2 & trying to force Raiden on the gamers ... & ... no, I'm not a Sony fan .. But ... I am a Snake fan. ... I do still play MGS2 often but Raiden is more Snakelike in MGS2 ... on Rising he looks like he's going to be more Foxlike ... I don't know, the game just doesn't interest me at all.

How about everyone else?

It's the title that is probably going to throw people off the most; you call it Metal Gear Solid, and you're going to expect the same style. Which it isn't. Changing the title to Metal Gear Rising, would be enough to allow the audience to separate it somewhat.

Gray Fox is a bitchin' character, but he's dead, so I think it's partly a way of giving the gamers the chance to play as one of the franchises most awesome characters.
I like the idea of being able to hide above and below, and I really liked the video they showed of slashing everything. Though, the fact they are openly focusing the vast majority of their attention on that one mechanic has me a little skeptical that the game might be shallow overall because of it. (A sequel might be better if that happens, as they'll have that aspect worked out already, they'll focus more attention to the story)

Personally; I'm going to give it a chance, I won't buy it full price, but I'm going to be open about it, and not slam it before playing it...Like a lot of 'fans' seem to be irrationally doing already.

That slashing of everything is what's got me turned off the most. But then again, Raiden was always a slasher ever since Snake gave him that sword on MGS2 even though I don't use the sword when I play as Raiden unless I'm at a part of the game I have no choice ... The stealth is what I've loved from the beginning the very first time I played MGS. I'm not a running, gunning, slashing player ... I remember the first time I played MGS, my friend brought it over & when I was at the heliport & the guards suspected I was nearby, I was like WTH?! ... my friend says they see your footprints! I was like Wow!, this game is awesome & its been my favorite game ever since ...its definately going to be the first MGS console game that I do not pre-order or go out & buy on day 1 ... If I buy it, it'll probably be after its been out & its reduced to the greatest hits price & I still may not even buy it then because I'll watch the gameplay on youtube & if it has no major characters from other MGS games, I'm definately not buying it.

That's the problem with titles and franchises.

Konami have explicitly stated that they want this game to detach itself from the previous games, and become something new and fresh.
I too never used the sword in MGS2, but compare Raiden to Gray Fox; Jaeger was the ultimate ninja, and they've put this into Raiden.

The game will not be without its stealth elements, but it is being made with more action in mind. They're experimenting with new directions, and I think it would be good if the fans gave it a chance and tried it out.

It will be impossible NOT to draw comparisons between Rising and the previous games, because we're so familiar with that setup and everything. But don't think of it as Metal Gear Solid, think of it as a completely new and different game that just so happens to share certain parallels with a different franchise.

That's a good idea .... its not Metal Gear Solid ... & ... its a game that doesn't interest me ... so I don't need to buy it. :)

And your right, that exactly how I look at it. Its not MGS & hopefully most MGS fans will look at it as not MGS & not buy it unless they are into that type of game. I do not own any games of that type so its only natural I wouldn't want it & I'm not going to buy it just because Kojima puts MGS on it which is one thing I stated on another thread is wrong. I really think he's using the MGS name to get people to buy it who's going to be disappointed with it. I'm sure many fans will like it but don't put it out there as something its not. If he wants to go in a new direction, give it a new name. I understand he didn't want to keep Snake going as long as he did & he was kinda forced to keep it going longer then he wanted to. But Snake & Big Boss are gone now so MGS should be gone as well. I enjoyed MGS4 but I feel many things with that game were forced because of Kojima wanting to end it & move on. He's been wanting to move on since MGS2 I think, so MGS4 wasn't what it could or should have been. Don't get me wrong, it still was a great game overall but the story just left us with a bad ending for so many of its characters. :(

I too felt the MGS4 story wasn't as good as it could have been; also the gameplay severely lacked all the aspects that made the game so great. STEALTH!
For the most part, I ran through the area because the friendly factions were fighting the wars in front of me...The outcomes of those mini-wars didn't seem to be in any way affected by your actions. Most of the game felt pointless because of that.

There were some great looking levels though, but I think I like it because it's Metal Gear Solid and nothing else really. Plus; Akiba & Meryl...AWFUL!! hahaha.

Personally, I love action games, things like God of War, Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry etc etc. The way I see it, is they're combining fast paced 'kill loadsa bitches' gameplay mechanics with bits and bobs from Metal Gear Solid; to me, that's interesting, because I like both.

But you're right...Not everybody likes those games, so selling it on the title of an epic story arc like Metal Gear Solid is practically forcing a market. More to the point; a niche market. If you stick with Metal Gear Solid; new fans are unlikely to buy it because they will feel they should have played MGS 1-4 in order to understand what's going on...So much for trying to separate itself from the franchise...

I used stealth in MGS4 ... in fact right now I'm working on a game with No Alerts & it's not easy :) .... what you do with the rebels & pmc's won't change what happens within the game story BUT play a game killing men on both sides & it changes how hard the game becomes ... When both sides are out for your blood it can get difficult! :(

reply

Great, so, basically; don't kill allies and the rebels and PMCs fight each other, or kill the allies and have all direction averted to you.
Point being?

There are moments of stealth, yes, but the whole game isn't as rooted to it as the other games.

There was no point, really ... lol ... it was just "let's see what happens if I shoot at both sides" ... & it got to the point where if I was spotted at all by anyone, ... that was my butt getting kicked! ... lol

And true, ... the game wasn't geared as much toward stealth as MGS.

reply

Well, the way I see it, they're riding off the back of the mechanics of MGS4. I remember hearing from the beginning they wanted it to have more action in it, in MGS4 that is.

SO, I reckon, if you liked MGS4, Rising is only a small step up, in that there's more action than MGS4. And just a different character. MGS4 + MGS2 + More Action = Rising....?

Why the hell am I trying to sell this to you...I don't get anything from it!
Don't buy it, better yet, buy a copy and burn it in front of Kojima's smug face!

Yeah, we should get Kojima to give you a free copy of Rising since your promoting his game for him. :)

Haha, well the kick grab punch thing was what Snake was trained in; he didn't go AWOL and train to be a badass ninja and get fitted with an ability enhancing exoskeleton.

Different Characters, different styles.
Plus; what can you expect from Snake in MGS4? HA, to be honest, I thought he was going to have a fit of arthritis in the middle of a boss fight; or perhaps get stricken with Alzheimer's half way through the game and forget who he is and what he's doing.

MGS4 had mondo cutscenes, was pretty annoying because there were times when I didn't have time to watch them all, and had to stop it, and watch them all over again from the beginning ¬¬
The whole thing felt like a "Must. Finish. Story." thing.

Cutscenes is what I love most about MGS besides Snake ... so for me, they wasn't long enough.

I have all of the MGS games on my iPods & I watch the cutscenes any time the urge strikes. :)

reply

Haha, I have the cutscenes for MGS1 on my computer; but sadly for me the MGS4 scenes didn't have the same impact. I always skip them when I get to playing the game again; I actually haven't beat the game twice, only once and played spits and spats of the opening levels.

I tried the demo today and the writing wasn't even very good and they talk about how great the sword is but at the beginning there's some thing trees and it doesn't even let you cut them. I really don't understand why people who have played the demo say its so good. Was considering it maybe but after playing the demo any interest was killed.

I'm buying it for sure. Love me some Metal gear!. Gonna have to get me the grey fox and MGS4 Raiden skin too.
