Is Chris Rock up to it?

I don't know but it's certainly a challenging role for him to tackle. I guess if Sandler can do it with a modicum of success, so can Rock (hopefully). I loved Delpy in Before Sunrise and Killing Zoe with Stoltz but haven't really seen anything else since.

It will certainly be interesting to see. When I first heard about it I was unaware he would have such a central role. I'm sure Delpy would not have cast him if it wasn't fitting. The original was a comedy so I'm sure Rock can handle it. If you haven't seen 2 Days in Paris you should. I bet you'll be less concerned once you've seen it.

He's not funny in the film. Just sort of hangs out playing an up tight middle class New Yorker-looks confused mostly as Delpy and co. give with the clichés.

Exactly my suspiscion, he's never really been funny in a film, sometimes I think the audience fake a laugh just be polite because he's a comedian and of his race they feel they have to laugh, but he's just not funny. He's the only reason I probably won't look at the film. If he had a minor role, maybe I would've given it a chance but the thought of Chris Rock as the male lead is enough reason to give it a miss.
The story sounds good and bringing in the element of race into it makes it interesting but couldn't Delpy have chosen another Black actor in the lead role? Maybe someone who can act, perhaps? Chris Rock just plays himself all the time and he himself, is just no good!

Just saw this last night and he was great in it. I've always liked chris rock but never thought i would be able to take him seriously as a romantic lead. After this movie i find him very believable and would love to see him doing more of it. It was good to see him basically playing the straight man. My only criticism is that there were a couple of moments where he is kind of doing a little bit of a stand up monologue, and that was to much of a reference to what he is mostly known for. Would have been better if they had just allowed him to be completely the straight guy.

Other than that he was good - smart, funny and sexy. A winning combination

...he wasnt on In Living Color...the race argument on here is pathetic too

Black people can seek success all they want, but I thought when I created this thread I was only discussing the merits of his acting and not what the colour of his skin was.

Like an earlier poster said, I never found Chris Rock believable or funny. His comedy is pretty generic. Generic in the sense that it follows a simple formula of making fun of other races and that's not to accuse Rock and Rock alone, a lot of his contmeporaries are also guilty of this who are a variety of colours and creed. I did watch one movie where he had limited exposure and was acceptable. I actually find his voice and face very annoying. He sounds like squeaky kid who tattle tells on people in the school yard and that one dimensional facial expression where he can't decide if he wants to smile or cry is ever so permanent in every scene. Just take him in controlled doses otherwise he just starts to grate on you.

Reign Over Me was a great movie. Sandler actually succeeded in invoking true heart felt sympathy and agony in his portrayal. The kind of agony I get from Rock is the kind I feel like I need to vacate the premises, post haste.

Why are you non-Black people so *beep* threatened by Black people and our many talents and triumphs that everything we do and the appreciation of it are boiled down to race? Pathetic.

"I am not worried, Harry...I am with you."

reply

That's quite a blanket accusation of all non-black people. I would prefer not be lumped in with that group of people that are "threatened" by black people and their success.

reply

Yes it is not all white people. But the white people I refer to when I make statements about them be threatened by black people who are successful know exactly who they are.

We are all aware it is not all white people and like white people we do not like to be lumped all in one big ball either, something a lot of white folks love to do with us. Name one race of people who have been stereotyped as much as black people?

The bigots know who they are, and if you are not one you should not think someone is talking about you.

Go watch this movie then... he is amazing in it.
Same as Sandler did.
