Could this try any harder to look like a Woody Allen film?

Seriously?

Really?

I thought of Woody Allen as I was watching the film. Delpy plays a character which reminds me of how Allen acts in a few of his big-hitters, like Manhattan. She's very neurotic, for example. The way some of the jokes are portrayed remind me of Allen's delivery.

There's a review on Rotten Tomatoes which makes a reference to Woody Allen, too.

Chris Rock is a huge fan of Woody Allen.

reply

Clearly you are not up to date with what a screwball Julie Delpy is...this is all her here, nothing to do with Woody

reply

Now that would be a real redefinition of the word screwball.
Delpy is a dishrag compared to real screwball greats like Carole Lombard.

reply

Gonna have to disagree with that...to me both Delpy and Lombard are two of the greatest actresses ever...To be or not to be is one of my favorite comedies and Before Sunset is one of my favorite romances, they are both great in their own unique way :)

reply

Well dishrag may be a bit extreme by poster but Carole Lombard is sheer genius.
She is among the greatest of that wonderful era of female talent in roles that played so well to the fem side. When one scans her film bio it reads like a Picasso in output or a Chaplin. Can't compared a proven talent that showed the depth of her chops to that of a relative newcomer. We'll see over time. I mean she did all that work and passed at age 33!
As to the Woody touches. Geez so many have been influenced by his output that of course there will be spillover. That's to be expected. Next hot popular talent will likely see spin off effect too. That's just the nature of creativity. Some got it, some copy it and some don't bother sensing they have neither but may know the inherent difference.
Side note is that I've always been leery of titles that traffic in well known things like big popular cities. That manages to smack of desperation when starts to look there'll be a whole series. 1 Day in D.C. 0.5 Day in South Beach. 15 Minutes in L.I. ??

Any mention of Woody Allen with regard to this film is complimentary to it.

I think Allen is definitely an inspiration for Delpy (she even wrote a part for him in an upcoming film). But as an independent filmmaker, why wouldn't he be? Allen is pretty much an inspiration for every romantic-comedy independent filmmaker; he has had an incredible career that mostly stayed within that sub-genre.

But as far as this looking exactly like an Allen film - I've only seen this film's predecessor (2 Days in Paris) and I can see similarities in that Delpy's character is neurotic, there are witty lines, and there are themes of adultery (Allen's go-to). But that's it, and those are all pretty much tropes of the independent romantic-comedy genre anyway.

reply

Yes it could: it could have some 30's New Orleans jazz music during the opening credits, or a golden standard sung by Nat Cole or Sinatra during a montage, like every other rom com set in NY.

- A point in every direction is the same as no point at all.

This is similar to Woody Allen to the same extent that *beep* is similar to chocolate. That is to say - rather remotely.

reply

BEING FUNNY. It wasn't bad but ... well ... maybe it was supposed to be one of Woody's later, not so funny films ... like that one about a tennis player or something. I don't know. I stopped watching Woody a long time ago.

This is probably the only Delpy I'll watch. The script was moronic. there were some good moments, but the Obama monologues, the soul stuff, half of what the father did, the paeans to NYC (& more that I've already erased from my memory) were just moronic.

oh & btw, someone should tell her that stereotypes are cheap laughs AT BEST.

Your analysis is spot-on. Unfortunately, most of Woody Allen's movies aren't very good either.

reply

Why do people strive to imitate Woody Allen? As someone who has seen a couple of his films that for some reason are on the Top 250 here, he's overrated, to be kind.

"I watch a lot of movies" - Me.

reply

I don't get him either. I think he's a bad comedic actor and most of the lines I've seen him give are corny as hell. Plus, that "neurotic little guy" act is *extremely* annoying. Some people react to it like it's comedy gold, guess it's a matter of taste.

reply

No it does not .I think "girls" and tiny forniture 'r much more allenesque but is that even purposedly done?I mean..all the ny based stories have something to do with each other.even sex on the city.like, you must have notice that a lot of the shows or movie set there deal with the difference between ny inhabitants there and the people coming from outside.another typical "comedy bit" of ny based stories is showing the typical neurotic inhabitants women you seem to meet there on every corner and their bizarre life.

reply

Do these NY based stories include The French Connection, Godzilla and The Warriors?

What is it with the frogs? They always end up delivering sermons on life. Only they know how to love and how to cook. Thankfully her frenchness is tempered by Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke in the trilogy. A talented actress but she should perhaps leave it that
