Close - Streep

I dunno, I thought Close's *quiet* performance was just about as good as the scene-chewing, brasher performance of Streep this season. McTeer also Oscar worthy but don't recall seeing her name.

Meryl Streep has a clause in her contract that stipulates that she must be nominated for an Oscar for her performance. Okay, not really. It's just that I think Streep gets an easy ride where Oscars are concerned especially nominations. As incredibly gifted as Streep is, I think many people are too captivated by her aura and reputation in the industry. I'd much rather someone like Close get her share of recognition for an equally strong performance.

agree, close is good

she deserves an oscar this year

i mean, they gave it to sandra, julia etc

close should get one for all her great performances too

Meryl Streep should win another OScar but not for The Iron Lady. She did a good job but the film is without any susbtance, so shallow and disconnected that it's a shame to give it an award. Meryl Streep is nominated every year and has lots of films in the pipeline. Glenn Close seems to struggle to find decent roles and she probably won't play such a strong character very soon. Her performance is subtle and powerful. I really hope she'll be the surprise winner.

just saw Albert Nobbs. Glenn should be looking at that Oscar today. Meryl was good, she's always good but Glenn's beautifully quiet performance was heartbreakingly well done. It's tougher to say little and convey so much than it is to have reams of dialogue to work with.

Close lost herself in her performance—Streep was more playacting and most of her later roles IMHO come across as more of a caricature.

What does Glenn Close have to do to get oscar recognition???

reply

An Oscar nomination _is_ Oscar recognition.

A Win!.....but I think you already know what I meant

I just saw this film today, so we all know who won the Oscar.

Glenn Close's portrayal of this character was so wonderful. It will stay with me for a long, long time. She was superb, and as others have said, it was a quiet performance, as was, really, Janet McTeer's who I love. Both were really wonderful, as always.

How can everyone be so generous in praising Gwen Close's performance in this movie. Stone faced and lacking any body language for 99% of the movie. Sorry, but I set the bar a bit higher for what I consider award winning performances.

I appreciate your opinion, and I can see why you think so. But, I think that if that is the case, you didn't look very closely at her performance. The feelings conveyed were done so very subtly, under the surface, but they came across nonetheless.

I think sometimes these portrayals are harder to do by a long shot than the more showy, in your face kinds of performances that always get the attention.

I remember thinking this when I saw Anthony Hopkins in Elephant Man, in a scene that showed him seeing (for the first time) the main character in the side show at the carnival. There was so much emotion on Anthony Hopkins' face and in his eyes, and he never said a word, or moved, for that matter.

I'm not saying Meryl Streep didn't deserve the Oscar, she's always fantastic, but there should be recognition for the quiet performances as well.

i completely agree with you BlueRoses47!

people really failed to see how Glenn Close did it. they really got used to seeing her portray a manipulative character so when she did something extremely different, they called it drag!

how i wish they'll watch the movie again and see its message.... see all the emotions conveyed in her eyes (which is more powerful than using your mouth).

not all winning-performances should be a loud one, indeed!

not all best performances should be based on how high can an eyebrow reach, not how much anger should be shown, not how loud one can shout, etc.

the academy owed meryl streep more than glenn close so they thought it would be wiser to give it to the former.

mark my word, next time these two acting greats meet again in the same category, the academy will hand it to glenn close....

Tilda Swinton gave my favourite actress performance of 2011 , but I think Glenn was definitely the most deserving of the five nominees .
I think she has been unlucky due to many factors :

1.It took too long to do the movie . In the early 90's , Szabo ( who's also the author of the stage adaptation the movie is based upon ) was considered to direct the movie. Had he done it , the film would have probably been deeper ( just like the short novel and the play are ) and less soapy . Rodrigo Garcia isn't a brilliant director , although I'm not really knocking this movie too much . It is still quite interesting , wonderfully acted and overall superior to the films all the other ladies were nominated for ( particularly the unspeakable "The Iron Lady" ).

2.She was very unlucky to make this rentrée the very year the Academy finally bestowed Meryl her third . Had she done this movie in the early 90's - shortly after "Dangerous Liasons" - they could have possibly seized the opportunity to compensate her for a series of terrible snubs .

3.Quite ironically , she was offered the role of Margaret Thatcher before Streep and declined it . She actually said that she's not interested in that kind of mimetic things and that she prefers to play characters that can touch the viewers . I know what she means .

4.It would have probably helped her a bit if she had been paired with a very good actress , but not unusually so as Janet McTeer . Janet is so monstrously talented that she walked away with the movie in my view .

You have something there with the teaming up of Glenn with Janet McTeer. Janet McTeer is a wonderful talent and was fantastic in this role.

reply

Apparently Janet is going to guest star in the first episode of the new season of "Damages" . I'm looking forward to see her acting opposite Glenn once more , they're a great couple .

reply

They are both fine actresses. Streeps gets offered better roles than Close.

Maybe so, but I think Glenn Close is far better than Meryl Streep in just about everything.
