Hated this movie, it was terrible!

This entire movie was stupid and pointless, don't even bother wasting your time.

Even though this movie sucked, ill still say it spoiler alert below.

If you like this film i don't know whats wrong with you.

Everything was wrong with this movie. Except for 1 scene i can appreciate that lasted like 20 seconds.

I gave it 1 star, would have given it 0.

First off lets start in the plane, liam knows plane is about to crash, doesn't even try to help the stewardess.

No 2. everybody dies, POINTLESSLY. Why even bother telling a story, having character development when the characters are going to die 2 mins later. POINTLESS. Leaves viewer dissatisfied. And feeling pissed off, ripped off.

No 3. Myguver shot gun sticks, they used 1, ok... the other 5 sticks? where was that plot concept going, did they all just forget about that.

No 4. Didn't even bother to find another way down the cliff, and when they do get down, what *beep* wolves can fly now?

No 5. Absurdly overpowered wolves. And giant game of thrones dire wolves even. Trying to make these wolves seem like aliens or some crap. Secondly characters smart enough to make a shotgun stick, but too stupid to stand their ground against wolves, make spears, and trying to outrun a wolf. SMART. writer of this film needs to be shot, and banned from writing another script again.

Stupid movie dont waste your time.

Since I can't tell whether this is a trolling attempt or not, let me address this as if its legit.

You missed the point.

Don't feel too badly, most people who don't like this movie make the same mistake. Some of it was even on the studio for the way the movie was advertised. Some of it probably just on all of us because we've seen so many of the action/survival type movies made over the years that we just have expectations going into a movie that looks like this that hey, it must be another one, and that means it should follow these rules.

But here's the thing: its not an action flick, nor is it a survival flick. Its about something much much deeper than that. Its a philosophical question in survival flick clothing. There are even some people who don't even think the events on screen happened in the real world. They think maybe they died in the crash and were in a kind of purgatory. Some even think its possible Ottway actually did commit suicide there at the beginning of the movie and the rest of it is his own personal purgatory. Its all an allegory.

In any case, the mere fact those sorts of elements are in play should tell you that you probably missed something if you think everybody died for nothing. To the contrary, each of the men represented a different way to face death. A different response to meeting your fate. Is there remorse? Do you lay down? Do you lose your decency? Do you fight until the bitter end? They all mattered.

And the wolves, the chasm, the river...even if you don't buy that they are all elements of purgatory, they are certainly all metaphors more than detailed and accurate real world elements. Natural wolves don't act like these creatures did. But maybe death does when it comes for you. If this were actually a survival flick, then I'd agree. A lot of mistakes and head scratchers. But that's not what this is at all. This is a very deep movie about life and death and how you'll face it in the end. Its a great movie once you understand that. I just wish the moviemakers had been less careless with the real world elements so they wouldn't have distracted so many viewers.

reply

So you think that seeing whats not in a movie, makes a movie great. HA.

Stare at a wall and think up your own movie, would be better time spent than watching this horrible film.

The story sucked, the concept sucked, and yes. There are rules you must follow in a certain genre. For the film to be exciting.

And at what point did any of what i wrote sound like a troll.

reply

Actually you're sounding like more of one now. Which wouldn't be a surprise.

I just gave you the keys to the movie, now think it through.

And no, the great majority of professional reviewers quickly picked out this movie's philosophical heft. Its hardly made up. That was the intent. The great majority of people who didn't like it are people who either went in expecting a different genre of film (often shallow action junkies tricked by the trailer), or got tricked by the film's trappings into assuming a different genre of film. Some of the most extreme of those turn into these ridiculous little green creatures called trolls, apparently wanting to trumpet their ignorance for the world to see. Not sure why.

In any case, once you pick up that this movie is actually focused on much deeper things than wolves and snow, that its a grim allegory about life and death and the will to fight, then you understand what you've just watched. And its actually kind of brilliantly moving.

reply

I understood it after I watched it, and I still thought it sucked. Exactly what I expected from someone who gave us Smokin' Aces and The A-Team, and who is now relegated to TV work and low budget straight to video movies.

I want a Lamborghini. I hear they cost an arm and a leg.

reply

You're too stupid to get what the movie is about. There's a guy who wanted to commit suicide but for some reason is fighting to live.

The truth is, many suicide victims or those who think or attemped are actually fighting to survive. They will find ever reason to live until there is no more reasons.

You're obviously to young and naive or just too stupid to understand beyond the visual of a movie. Stick with your mindless action and potty mouth comedies.

reply

Very good. I have loved this film especially because it is a hell of a philosophical exercise and I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried each time i saw it at the very end. I would also just like to add that it's not just about death either, it's about survival and the way each of us goes about overcoming the obstacles in our lives. A very very powerful film indeed.

What is the philosophical question?

Its all an allegory.

Describe some scenes in the film and what they are an allegory for.

each of the men represented a different way to face death. A different response to meeting your fate. Is there remorse? Do you lay down? Do you lose your decency? Do you fight until the bitter end? They all mattered.

How did they matter? What did their deaths tell us to consider?

And the wolves, the chasm, the river...even if you don't buy that they are all elements of purgatory, they are certainly all metaphors more than detailed and accurate real world elements.

Describe how they are elements of purgatory. Purgatory is a well documented idea.... how do each of these scenes in the film represent those ideas?

What is the philosophical question?

What is the point of all this? Why am I alive? How do I cope with the harsh truth that I'm going to die? How do I cope with loss?

These are some of the most fundamental philosophical questions there are and this movie makes a point to bring up these questions and provide us with different characters who all verbalize and/or demonstrate through action, how they deal with these questions.

Right from the start the main character is going to blow his head off cuz he can't handle the loss of his wife.

On the plane the dude that sits next to Liam Neeson seems nervous and starts blabbering away in an attempt to distract himself. Later when there is turbulence, he makes the comment about not putting your head down cuz your spine will end up going through your head. Everyone gets upset with him, but he needed to verbalize it to try to deal with his fear. He's not saying it to be a dick. He's afraid and talking is how he deals with it.

This is all before any of the survival part of the movie takes place and it's already extremely clear that this movie is showing us people dealing with loss and fear.

After the crash, that guy dies of an injury and the black dude starts laughing. Is it funny? No. He's laughing cuz that's how he deals with his fear.

The other guy, Diaz, lashes out. He picks fights, questions the authority figure, demonstrates a faith in technology with that watch and gets mad later that it isn't saving them.

The dude with the glasses deals by having faith and believing in god. He loves his daughter and it gives him a sense of purpose and meaning in his life.

I mean, the movie isn't trying to hide these things. It's not as if the people that see this stuff are "reading too much into it" or something.

Liam Neeson tells them about his dad's poem.

Once more into the fray
Into the last good fight I'll ever know
Live and die on this day
Live and die on this day

That wasn't just meant to be a nice moment where he's recalling a fond memory of his dad. It's the entire point of the movie. Life is a fight, every day. It's the best fight you'll ever know. Today you are either going to live or you're going to die, and eventually you will lose this fight like everyone else before you.

He chooses to not kill himself and instead fights to keep himself and these other guys alive.

He refers to them in the beginning as ex-cons, fugitives, drifters, *beep* He calls them men unfit for mankind. By the end, he's looking over each of their wallets, each of their pictures, their loved ones, and he feels deep pain and sorrow that he and the world have lost them.

Technology fails them, civilization fails them, god fails them. They only have themselves and each other. It's how humans started and why the movie takes place in this setting.

To think this movie is meant to be an action movie about surviving wolves and harsh weather conditions is to miss a deep well of meaning that is right in front of your eyes the whole time.

I respectfully disagree here. I thought it was a very boring stupid movie. I also hate when movies try to make some sort of a statement but it's so ambiguous that a lot of people can't even figure it out.

reply

I agree with Jack. The movie had no theme.

imdb should make users take an IQ test and who fails is not allowed to vote, I'm sure if that was the case you would not voted here.

Sounds plain rude to me.

Just scroll on, or are you the allegory for nasty?

reply

Yup, very stupid movie. Shame.

reply

Just for reference. What's the worst movie you've ever seen?

reply

Liar.

reply

Agree, this movie was horrible. It was one of the worst movies of the last 5 years, and I gave it a 3/10. (Mostly for the first 10 minutes.) It was also the MOST boring movie I have seen in the last 5 years, along with "We Need to talk about Kevin". I even enjoy slow moving period pieces and dramatic films, but this film was just STUPID beyond stupid and therefore completely boring in its inept stupidity. Giant wolves, banal conversations, dumb characters, dumb writing, and pointless plot that seems like it was made by and for people who are depressed or something. (I used to be myself so that is the only condition I could see myself enjoying this terrible movie.) If you have any ounce of happiness in you, do not waste more than 10 minutes of your life watching anything beyond the plane crash...as it will be just that...a waste of life.

Along with 'banal', I think everyone of the above terms has been used at one time or another on this board to describe The Grey. The movie and its maker deserved it.

I'm a Liam Neeson fan and he often chooses to be in great movies, but this wasnt one of them.

Most characters and dialogs were terrible. Drama and "scares" felt forced and predictable from a mile away.

I didnt even finish, it was unbearably bad and illogical movie. The big wolves expert didnt even use or make weapons to fight the wolves, instead was attacking them with bare hands! At 50 mins. mark Ottway FINALLY made something, but as OP mentioned they used it ONCE. Way too little, way too late. If I'm under attack by anyone, one of the first things I'd do is to get/make something to protect myself, and after plane crash there were loads of materials to work with, yet this logic was beyond Ottway and other criminals(?).

Wolves also dont behave anything like shown in the movie.

Bottom line, whether you like survival movies, or looking for some deeper meaning, or turned in just for Neeson - better save time and look for any of these things elsewhere.

3/10
