'One year later' bit

That last bit at the end of the movie ruined, for me, a possibly enchanting finale. The scene when Marie takes Francis under her umbrella and they start walking together in the rain, in slow-motion was going to be a perfectly poetic and cinematographic ending. The re-encounter with Nicolas, the absurd scream of Francis, the Louis Garrel thing marking a new beginning etc. They were sooo unnecessary, in my opinion.

I agree about the umbrella scene, it was really great. But, Marie and Francis aren't portrayed as mature characters; Francis masturbates to Nicholas' shirt and Marie says he was the love of her life. They were in a Cold War-esque conflict in which none of them were straight to Nicholas about their feelings (neither does Nicholas, he did confused them whith his way of being around them; as if provocation was his way of having fun) until it was all screwed up. And that's what I thought Dolan was trying to say in that last scene.

I get what you mean, the scream from Francis left me both baffled, scared, and mildly tickled. As for the new guy showing up, I sort of rolled my eyes because it was a bit cheesy in a way.
