What did the tallymarks signify? I think I missed the part where it was explained/the meaning was insinuated.

He puts a mark every time someone turns down his offer to move in and live with him, I think it shows he is obsessive.

I thought the marks went up every time someone said that they were not interested in him. But I don't speak French, was only reading the sub-titles so maybe I missed where it was said that it was also about someone rejecting his offer for them to move in with him.
