Few likeable characters in this movie

I found few characters in this movie likeable. The duplicitous heartless mother, the greedy lazy offspring, the grasping social-climbing nurse, the unfaithful solicitor (although he did come good at the end), the amoral politician (now there's an oxymoron) etc.

Possibly the German maid (Morse) and the solicitor's wife (Nevin) were the only ones with any decency.

Overall, a very bleak movie. I suppose that this is consistent with author Patrick White's reputation as an embittered curmudgeon.

Yes, you're right.

But White maintained he was just as unlikeable as all those other unlikeable people.

He said he strived to achieve what he referred to as the 'Twyborn state of grace'. So you need to read 'The Twyborn Affair' to see what that is.

(BTW: It would be easier to make 'Twyborn' into a satisfactory movie than the lumpen disaster that this EofS movie is.)

It seems to me that Australians have a way of being painfully honest about their humanity whereas in the West things get more romanticized.
