Who was the other family ?

Really enjoyable piece of drama but am at a loss as to who the other family was and how did they fit into the story. This is where Dorothy arrives at the house with Basil and picks flowers from the garden but the child of the house gives her a bunch. How was this family related to the story? Any ideas?

They are the caretakers of the property. Obviously the older couple have been living in the city, and the two children are overseas, so the old lady has kept the country property and has this family living there to look after it. When the solicitor was reading the will, he mentioned the caretakers.

Thank you Stella. All clear now, regards G.

A fair question - it isn't made clear in the film; I wondered if a fuller explanation might have been cut on the editing floor.

It seemed obvious to me...Basil and Dorothy went through their childhood photos in the den? lounge? and Dorothy was housed in her mother's room overnight. The caretaker's wife spoke of how much she admired Dorothy's mum so perhaps she had grown up on the station or lived there as a child.

After Basil cut his foot in the pool (how dangerous that was, there could have been salties saltwater crocodiles in there waiting to eat him alive) remember that the doctor had known them both as children. This was the source of their mother's great wealth. Compare them to a rich American cattle baron.
