Who was the guy in the van.

That the Chechens were holding. Was he just a nobody used to intimidate Marv and Bob?

He was the brother with the broken watch in the robbery, kept in the dark by his brother the other robber, about how this bar was a good target for a robbery. When the Chechens opened the van door, they wanted to gauge Marv's reaction. Marv reacted alright, by killing the brother who knew who Marv was and his involvement with the robbery (but didn't know what happened to his brother, the last time he saw him he was getting in a car).

You could see the Chechens were torturing the kid, and put a stake through his ankle. They cut off his arm with the broken watch and put it in the bag with the money to be found on the fence.

reply

It wasn't the brother, Briele. Briele had a mustache and brown eyes and the guy in the van clearly has blue eyes and no mustache.

I don't think so. There is no point to having an unrelated guy being tortured to death and exposed to Marv and Bob. The reaction the Ukrainians were looking for was recognition, not to intimidate them by showing a guy being tortured. Marv and Bob were in the life, before the Ukrainians made them flinch.

Marv immediately knew what was happening. If Marv recognized the guy (who wore a mask during the robbering) then the Ukrainians would know he set it up. If the guy didn't recognize Marv (which he clearly did) then he wouldn't have been the guy who robbed the bar. The guy in the van recognized Marv. Marv didn't appear to recognize the guy.

This is a story, based on a Dennis Lehane short story. There is a reason for everything in a story. Your reason, and question (who was the guy in the van?) and the fact that you ask it in the first place, should inform you that you might rethink your understanding of the scene.

You're making incorrect assumptions. Watch the scene in the car before the robbery back to back with the scene in van afterwards. They're completely different people.

reply

No. Look at the credits. Not a thing for 'guy in the van being tortured'. Just Briele is credited. No "Random being tortured in a van."

reply

Yes. Unlike you I watched both scenes just before I wrote my comment.

You're lost as *beep*

reply

Then why did the guy freak out when he saw Marv? Stop it. Just stop.

reply

In the book it wasn't either of the brothers who did the robbery, just a random guy who had crossed the Chechyens. Just a way to send a message- this is what happens to people that screw with us.

reply

This isn't something I thought about. But it is possible. And maybe likely if its in the book although books get changed a lot in movies. And people talking about the reaction of the guy in the van.....he had very recently had a big spike driven through his ankle....who knows how he's gonna react.

That previous poster is a liar. It is a short story available free on the internet, "Animal Rescue." No robbery at all. Enjoy. http://www.e-reading.club/chapter.php/127154/5/Lehane_-_Boston_Noir.html

reply

Wrong. Short story, available on the internet (free). No robbery at all. Liar.

Or maybe you should rewatch the movie and notice that they're two different actors who don't look anything alike...

Nah. Same guy. To viewers like you, wearing a ski mask and later having duct tape over the mouth makes it like "two different actors." And nobody, including you, explains why the guy is so scared when he sees Marv (not Bob).

reply

S P O I L E R S !!!

Looked like a different guy to me... Just a warning to Marv and Bob.
My thought is that Marv killed the "watch" guy and left the arm for Bob to find. Remember? Marv told Bob to remove the Xmas decorations. He knew Bob would find the bag with the arm.

Else, why would the Chechens put bloody money in the bag? They'd have it already & maybe even keep Marv scared enough to pay the $5k to them, too. Double their money and keep Marv in line.

Also, Marv's sidelong glances at Bob as he got close to and started inspecting the bag. I think Marv knew what was in there.

Marv also knew Bob would take responsibility for disposing of the arm, given Bob's skill in disposing of the previous victim. Marv is the only one who knew Bob did that deed.
