'We kept your kidnap t-shirt, for sentimental reasons...'

Sorry, this movie well & truly lost me the moment Nathan figured out the truth of his kidnapping because he still owned the t-shirt that appears in the photo of his younger self on a missing persons website.

W ... T ... F???

1. Why in Holy hell would his 'parents' keep the shirt they kidnapped him in? As a keep-sake?

2. Likelihood of him wearing the t-shirt he would just so happen to be kidnapped in that he was also photographed wearing (like he only owned one t-shirt as a kid. Pfft.)

I mean, this movie in general was ATROCIOUS - but that, *that* stuck in my craw early on and would not budge.

Furthermore, why did Nathan instantly accept the fact that his parents kidnapped him? I mean, it had previously been established that his best friends were 'pranksters', up for a laugh - they're all in the same sociology class and presumably know what assignment topics they were all given - yet at no point does Nathan confront his besties and say, "hey! Did you fake a time-lapsed photo of my and post it on a missing persons website?". Just to throw some more ideas into the mix other than "My parents abducted me as a child and my whole life is a lie."

In perfect stillness, frankly, I've only ever found sorrow– 'The Poisonwood Bible'

1) His parents didn't kidnap him. They were his guardians looking after and protecting him.

2) The photo of him on the missing website was used by the bad guys to try and lure Nathan into contacting them, thinking he was missing. It wasn't that he was kidnapped in that t-shirt, that was just the picture the bad guys used.

Hope that helped.

That doesn't really explain why they still had that shirt though. I don't have ANY of the clothes I had when I was 6.

I get what you are saying, but I'm 51 and have a sweater I wore when I was four (knitted by a family friend) that my children wore when it fit them; the T-shirt from a softball league I played in when I was ES which my daughter wore; and a bowling shirt from middle school.

On the other hand, I have a lot of my kids clothes going back at least 11 years (both are currently teens). A lot of the Ts & polos went from my son to my daughter. Some are special, like my son's Harry Potter shirts that I keep for when he has kids - or I may have a quilt made from them. I have some of my daughter's beautiful church or holiday dresses as well as her First Communion dress (I was younger than she when I had First Communion, so she wore my dress a couple of years before her event).

A stained T-shirt would be different. Those we dispose of.

at first I was going to explain but you are just an idiot and not worth it

reply

Gee that is a very valuable answer to give to someone.

They ask a question because of something stupid in the movie, and you just insult them and say you're not answering. Yeah great one!!

reply

But it was a stupid question!

Maybe it was his favorite shirt, which would explain why he was wearing it on the day the photo was taken and also happened to be wearing it on the day he was taken from his home. Or, his parents might have packed a suitcase or something. It would be a lot of work to adopt a child and have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. Why not grab some clothes he already has?

I agree that it's strange that his parents saved his old clothes. They didn't have younger children who would wear them. Why waste storage space saving plain old cotton t shirts?

reply

Not strange at all. I still have a bunch of my baby clothes including blankets and shoes. -_- My mom refuses to throw them out for sentimental reasons...

Ok, gimme a smooch, I might not make it back

I've saved special baby clothes- first pair of baby jeans, special occasion dresses, baby shoes, first bathing suit, etc. By age 3, I wasn't saving plain old play clothes. But, the family in the movie had tons of storage space, so they didn't need to throw old stuff away.

So glad I'm not the only one. I've kept a lot more of my children's clothes than I should, but mine are adopted, and someone mentioned how much effort goes into adoption - I just want to keep everything. Blows me away to see how tiny my 17 year old once was. I also live in hope of fostering children or (someday) having grandchildren.

reply

the even weirder thing is that he kept it in his dresser... Who keeps baby clothes in their dressers when they're 18?
