What is wrong with people today???

I honestly have to tell you. If Hitchcock made Vertigo or North by Northwest today, or Spielberg made Raiders of the Lost Ark today, people would hate these movies. Every time an unrealistic thriller gets made today, people are overly critical. Like The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and all of these way too many comic book super hero films we're being inundated with are realistic?!? At the time I saw Abduction I was having problems in my life and had trouble sleeping. It was just what I needed to relax my mind. I didn't want to watch a film about hobbits, witches, or super heroes though I am a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter films). I wanted a film about real people in an unrealistic setting. I thought the movie was great. Why do people have to be overly critical about real people in unreal stories? The film isn't perfect, I'm sorry, I really think this film deserves more credit as a good action flick than it's gotten. I mean, seriously, a 4.8? Oh, and, incidentally, I thought Lily Collins, who I'd never seen before, was awesome.

I agree...I even bought the DVD...nothing wrong with a little escapism..

Every time an unrealistic thriller gets made today, people are overly critical.

Is that why Inception, Drive, Skyfall, The Bourne Series, Sin City, The Dark Knight, District 9, Gravity, The Prestige, Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, Shutter Island, Casino Royale, V for Vendetta, etc were all generally disliked?

Instead of complaining and generalizing the problems people had with this movie, why not take each argument head on and prove that your opinion even holds water?

The other movies you mentioned pull the audience into the story... we can immerse ourselves into that world, whether we are talking about Raiders, Middle Earth, Hogsmeade or Asgard. This movie didn't do it... at all. My 13 year old wanted to watch it because the premise interested her. She enjoys books such as Diary of Anne Frank, The Chinese Cinderella and I am Nuru(?), aged 9 and Divorced. These are true stories based upon children her age. The idea that she or someone she knows could have been abducted and not realized it appealed to her as a story - but that's not what it was, it was an action film, and not a very good one.

The screenwriter, Shawn Christensen, wrote Abduction as a Hitchcock-inspired spec script. The only reason Lionsgate acquired it was that they wanted to make an action movie, so they took the script and rewrote it as an action-packed romp. It was so unsettling for the writer that he rebooted his career from the ground up as a director and actor, with less emphasis on writing.

That, sadly, sounds entirely believable, but how come Shawn Christensen has sole writing credit if Lionsgate rewrote the film?

You are HONESTLY comparing ANY of these masterpieces, or indeed ANY competent film made before, to the absolutely pathetic, awkwardly acted, clumsily made, wretchedly written piece of monkey manure that "Abduction" is??????

Every Z movie director in the fifties would have made a more competent film.

This is a really funny post/thread. Comparing this dreck of a movie to those classics, it's at 4.8 because it really is an awful movie. Lautner absolutely cannot act, that is why he has no projects and no major director/producer will touch him with a 10,000 foot pole. Sure, there are people that find this movie entertaining, there are really bad movies out there as well I find very entertaining, BUT that doesn't mean that they are great movies. You can like really bad movies, I do, but lets not get nuts and think for a second that this movie is anywhere near the same ballpark as those the OP compared it to. Enjoy the movie for what it is.
