Missing actors

It seems like every season there are 3-4 shows where either Danny or Steve are gone. Does anyone know why?

For Danny it was mentioned there:

danny became a dad and does other projects on the mainland...he got it in his contract to do I think 5 less shows each season now

I assume it's either a cost saving measure or the two actors just can't stand each other and have it written into their contracts that they have to appear together as little as possible.
